“What is dance to you?” The question Veejay Sai’s 2016 tribute attributes to Mrinalini Sarabhai points toward an answer larger than technique: dance, she wrote, should be “awareness and a relevant force in contemporary life.” For Sarabhai, classical movement could speak to the present as well as embody beauty.
What dance meant to Mrinalini Sarabhai
Sarabhai described dance as “the radiance of my spirit,” according to Veejay Sai’s tribute in Scroll.in, published on 22 January 2016. The same article quotes her view that dance, beyond its essential beauty, “has to be awareness and a relevant force in contemporary life.” These are quotations as reported by the tribute, rather than independently verified transcripts.
That formulation helps explain the connection between her classical training and her choreographic interests. The tribute presents her work as bringing a classical movement vocabulary to contemporary social life and socially relevant themes. Dance, in this account, was not sealed off from the world around it; it could carry meaning about that world.
Darpana: building a performing-arts academy in Ahmedabad
Sarabhai founded Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad in 1949, according to Sai’s tribute. The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education’s hall-of-fame document identifies her as the academy’s founder-director and describes its training in dance, drama, music and puppetry. Darpana’s scope therefore extended beyond dance alone, bringing several performing arts together under one institution.

Her roles as dancer, choreographer, instructor and director linked performance with teaching and institution-building. The HBCSE document describes her as an Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor, as well as Darpana’s founder-director. Her legacy includes both the works she made and the academy she established.
Choreography and socially engaged work
Sai’s tribute reports that Sarabhai created more than 300 choreographic works. That is the figure given by the tribute; it is not presented here as an independently audited count. The number nevertheless conveys the breadth of a career in which choreography was a central part of her practice.

The tribute’s account emphasizes her effort to use dance in relation to contemporary awareness. It is a useful distinction: classical form was not simply a subject to preserve, but a vocabulary through which she could address concerns beyond the stage’s formal beauty. The specific interpretation belongs to the tribute, while Sarabhai’s quoted statement gives her own stated standard for dance.
Honors and public recognition
The President of India’s condolence release records Sarabhai’s Padma Shri in 1965 and Padma Bhushan in 1992; the HBCSE hall-of-fame document gives the same years. Sai’s tribute lists the Padma Shri as 1968, a conflicting date. The government release and HBCSE record support 1965, so that is the date used here.

Sai’s tribute also lists the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1970 and the Kalidas Sanman in 1996. These recognitions sit alongside her work as a choreographer and teacher, but they do not by themselves capture the artistic purpose she expressed: making dance a relevant force in contemporary life.

Mrinalini Sarabhai lived from 11 May 1918 to 21 January 2016. Her career joined performance, choreography, teaching and the founding of Darpana. The phrase “the radiance of my spirit,” reported in the Scroll tribute, gives a personal dimension to that public record; her question, “What is dance to you?”, leaves the larger definition open to each audience.
