Season 1 ends with John wounded and Jane facing the rival Smiths with one bullet left. The final gunfire happens off-screen, so the episode does not confirm whether John and Jane survive. Showrunner Francesca Sloane has said the ending is intentionally open to interpretation—and that, whatever viewers decide, it is a love story.
What happens in the final episode?
In Episode 8, “A Breakup,” John and Jane are separated after John ends their marriage. Separate attacks lead each to suspect the other: Jane is attacked at home and her cat, Max, is killed, while John discovers a trap at his mother’s home.

They meet, fight their way through the city, and return to their house. Under truth serum, they admit that neither had cheated and that each had deliberately missed chances to kill the other. They tell one another they love each other. Jane has learned that John’s given name is Michael; John learns that Jane’s is Alana.
The reconciliation is interrupted by another John and Jane Smith, played by Wagner Moura and Parker Posey. The rival couple explain that their high-risk assignments include killing other Smiths. The original pair reach a safe room, but John has been shot. Jane says she has one bullet left and goes to confront the rival Jane. The camera cuts to the exterior: flashes and gunshots are heard, then the episode ends.

Do John and Jane survive?
The finale does not say. It shows John badly wounded and Jane entering a dangerous confrontation with a single bullet, but it cuts away before revealing who is hit or what happens afterward. The off-screen gunfire creates suspense; it is not confirmation that either protagonist dies or survives.
| Reading | What supports it | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| They may survive | The episode withholds the result of the confrontation. Jane still has a bullet, and the sounds outside do not identify who fired or who was hit. | The episode does not show Jane overcoming the rival Smiths or John recovering. |
| They probably die | John is wounded, Jane is outnumbered, and the final sequence ends with three shots. Den of Geek argues that their deaths are the likelier reading. | The shots are off-screen, and the episode never establishes that they hit John or Jane. This is a critic’s interpretation, not confirmed plot fact. |
What did the showrunner say the ending means?
In a February 5, 2024 interview with TheWrap, co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane said, “It’s up to the viewer, depending on who you are, whether it’s a hopeful ending or not.” She added: “What it is, regardless of who you are and how you interpret it, it is a love story. That’s what I wanted it to end on — as a love story.” Her comments support an intentionally ambiguous ending rather than a canonical answer about survival.
Why end a spy story with a love confession?
The series pairs two recruits in an arranged marriage as cover for espionage. Their work depends on deception, but the relationship requires honesty. In an About Amazon interview published around the February 2024 premiere, Sloane described that tension: “In order to be a really good spy, you have to lie. But on the other end of that, in order to be in a really healthy relationship, you have to be really honest.”
The truth-serum scene makes that conflict concrete: John and Jane finally speak plainly about what they have done and how they feel just as their lives are in immediate danger. Their fate is unresolved, but their emotional reconciliation is not. This series’ setup also differs from the 2005 film: these John and Jane begin as strangers paired by an agency, not as an established married couple who discover that each is a spy.
