There is no objective all-time winner for the most star-studded movie cast: fame depends on era and audience, while cast size counts performers whether they are stars or not. For classic comedy, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is a showcase of famous comic performers; for an international war epic, The Longest Day assembles a broad cast; and the 2017 Murder on the Orient Express offers a compact contemporary ensemble. Guinness World Records’ largest-cast figures measure credited performers, not celebrity power.

What makes a movie cast “star-studded”?

The label has no standardized definition or settled all-time ranking. A film can have many credited performers without having many famous ones, while a smaller ensemble can feel packed with stars if its central roles are played by widely recognized actors. Fame also shifts across generations and countries.

A useful comparison separates three things: how many performers are credited, how many recognizable names appear, and whether those performers have substantial roles or brief cameos. The examples below illustrate different kinds of star power rather than compete for a single objective title.

Classic comedy: It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

Stanley Kramer’s broad comedy is a strong choice for viewers looking for a classic star-packed ensemble. Criterion’s cast listing includes comedy luminaries Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Spencer Tracy and Jonathan Winters, among others. The film also draws on the era’s cameo culture, mixing prominent performers with smaller appearances; a cameo should not be mistaken for a leading or equally substantial role.

Its running time depends on which version or presentation is meant. Criterion lists the general-release version at 163 minutes and describes a 197-minute extended version on its Blu-ray page. A dedicated film resource describes the original roadshow presentation as running more than three hours when the overture, intermission and exit music are included. These figures refer to different cuts or presentation elements, not one interchangeable runtime.

Criterion’s edition is a useful option for viewers who want to compare versions: its page describes a restored 4K transfer of the general-release version, a high-definition transfer of the 197-minute extended version, commentary, documentaries, archival interviews, trailers, subtitles and an essay. The page also lists a three-disc DVD edition.

International war epic: The Longest Day (1962)

The Longest Day takes a different approach to an ensemble, presenting the D-Day invasion through perspectives from both sides. 20th Century Studios describes its cast as international and gives the film’s release date as October 4, 1962, with a runtime of 2 hours 58 minutes. Its appeal as a star ensemble rests on national breadth and the scale of a large war epic, rather than on a comedy’s cameo-driven parade of familiar faces.

Modern ensemble mystery: Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

The 2017 adaptation demonstrates the contemporary studio all-star model: a recognizable group brought together inside a contained mystery. 20th Century Studios lists Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley. Agatha Christie Limited’s “Meet the Passengers” page adds or confirms performers including Olivia Colman, Lucy Boynton, Sergei Polunin, Marwan Kenzari and Manuel Garcia Rulfo.

Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer: Coordinated Independence as Applied to Jazz and Be-Bop, Vol. 1 (Book & CD-ROM)

Unlike a record based on total credited cast, this film’s star appeal comes from the concentration of recognizable names in the central passenger ensemble. The cast list alone does not establish that every performer has the same screen time or prominence.

Why the largest cast is not the most star-studded

Guinness World Records lists 381 credited performers for Die Zweite Heimat – Chronik einer Jugend (Germany, 1992), a production running 25½ hours (1,532 minutes). For a single feature, Guinness lists 260 credited performers for Dny Zrady (Czechoslovakia, 1973). These are credited-cast records, not awards for having the most famous ensemble; Guinness notes that records can change and may not be published online immediately.

Those figures answer a counting question, not a fame question. There is no comparable audience survey or ranking here that establishes which movie has the most recognizable cast, and counting award winners would not resolve the issue unless the award, role threshold and counting method were defined consistently.

Which film should you watch?

  • For a classic comedy ensemble: Choose It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World for comedy legends and cameo culture.
  • For international scale: Choose The Longest Day for a war epic framed around the D-Day invasion and perspectives from both sides.
  • For a compact contemporary mystery ensemble: Choose Murder on the Orient Express (2017) for a crowded passenger list of recognizable performers.
