If you want to follow Black Myth: Wukong into films, start with Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013). Its official synopsis brings Xuan Zang, Sun Wukong and a demon-hunting journey west together. Then watch its 2017 sequel, The Demons Strike Back. Two looser options are The Forbidden Kingdom and The Monkey King.
Why these films connect to Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong draws on Journey to the West, the classic story of the monk Xuan Zang and his companions. That story has traveled through literature, opera, film, animation and television for more than four centuries, according to a 2025 academic article (source). The films below are not all equally faithful adaptations: some retell or continue the journey, while others borrow its characters or imagery.
Movies to watch after Black Myth: Wukong
1. Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013)
Best for: A comic fantasy adventure that directly brings Xuan Zang and Wukong into the same journey.
Magnet Releasing’s official synopsis follows the young demon hunter Xuan Zang as he confronts a water demon, a pig demon and Sun Wukong, then takes them along as disciples on a journey west. Of these recommendations, this is the clearest fit for someone seeking the classic’s central figures and premise on screen (Magnet Releasing).

Sony Pictures identifies The Demons Strike Back as the sequel to Stephen Chow’s Conquering the Demons (Sony Pictures). Watch it after the 2013 film: it continues that screen interpretation rather than serving as a standalone, unrelated adaptation.
3. The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)
Best for: A modern, English-language martial-arts fantasy with a looser connection to the legend.

This film is described as loosely based on Journey to the West. Its story brings a modern American teenager into contact with Sun Wukong’s Ruyi Jingu Bang, the magical staff. It is better understood as a reworking with recognizable elements than as a close retelling (reference description).
4. The Monkey King (2014)
Best for: A Wukong-centered story rather than a full group journey west.
An adaptations index describes this film as focusing on Wukong’s rebellion against Heaven and identifies Donnie Yen as its star (adaptations index). That makes it a natural candidate if the Monkey King himself is what you want to follow. The index is useful for finding titles, but consult a reliable film or distributor listing for complete credits and current viewing options.

For other possibilities, an adaptations index lists screen versions including Monkey King vs. Er Lang Shen, while the community-maintained Journey to the West Media catalog groups films as retellings, continuations, prequels or reimaginings (adaptations index; movie catalog). Treat those catalogs as discovery aids, then verify the film’s premise and credits through a distributor or studio source.
