Teen witchcraft: The Craft (1996)
The Craft is the clearest choice if you want a teen story built around witchcraft and a group of outsiders. Sony classifies it as drama, fantasy and suspense, and describes a new girl joining high-school students who have discovered witchcraft. The story’s power comes through occult practice among peers rather than a single inborn psychic ability. Sony Pictures’ film page lists 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions; that format listing does not establish current stock or availability in a particular territory.
Psychic danger: Firestarter (1984)
In Firestarter, Charlie is born with the ability to start fires using her mind after her parents take part in a psychic experiment. A covert agency wants to capture and control her, making her ability both the source of danger and the reason others pursue her. Universal’s official synopsis outlines the premise, while the AFI Catalog entry provides a fuller account of the psychic abilities and agency plot.
Lighter fantasy: the two Matilda films
Matilda (1996)
Sony describes this version as a family comedy and modern fairy tale about a super-smart girl who is misunderstood by her parents and school principal. It is a lighter choice than the teen suspense or psychic thriller above. The official description emphasizes the family-comedy premise, so it is less specific about the supernatural ability than the 2022 film’s description. See Sony Pictures’ page for Matilda (1996).

Matilda the Musical (2022)
This is a separate musical film, not another name for the 1996 adaptation. Netflix describes Matilda as an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and uses courage to help others. Choose it when you want the power linked to standing up for other people, with a musical format. Netflix’s page for Matilda the Musical identifies the film and its premise.
How to choose
- For teen witchcraft: pick The Craft (1996), with its high-school coven premise and suspense elements.
- For a psychic thriller: pick Firestarter (1984), where a young girl’s fire-starting ability draws the attention of a covert agency.
- For a lighter family story: consider either Matilda film, keeping in mind that the 1996 comedy and the 2022 musical are different adaptations.
- For a power used to help others: Netflix’s description makes that theme explicit for Matilda the Musical (2022).
“Girls” here includes child and teen protagonists, and “supernatural powers” spans witchcraft, psychic ability and fantasy gifts. The films are therefore a focused starting selection, not an exhaustive list or a set of interchangeable genres. Check the local age rating before choosing a film for a particular viewer; the premise descriptions alone do not establish age suitability.
