For a 30-day month, each 100 watts of continuous AC input uses 72 kWh (units). Measure the system while it runs your actual streaming workload, then apply your current electricity tariff and bill charges.
Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity use
Use average AC input power, not the power supply’s rated capacity:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average AC input watts Ă— hours per day Ă— days Ă· 1,000.
For uninterrupted operation over 30 days, this becomes average watts × 0.72 = monthly kWh. For example, 100 W × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000 equals 72 kWh. That is arithmetic, not a measured result for any particular PC. Indian bills commonly call a kWh a “unit.”

To estimate the charge, multiply the added units by the applicable energy rates, taking account of how the tariff applies across slabs. This gives an energy-charge estimate, not necessarily the increase in your complete bill: fixed charges, duties or taxes, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, and subsidies may also matter.
Measure the PC under its real streaming workload
Why the PSU rating is not the answer
A desktop power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity, not what the whole computer continuously draws from the wall. A brief idle reading may also miss changes during playback, encoding or other tasks. Measure the complete PC at its AC input while it is doing the 24/7 YouTube streaming work you intend to run. An accumulating kWh meter, observed over a representative period, can help capture variation.

ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement procedure calls for an approved true-power meter at the AC source and says to connect the computer directly to the measurement outlet, without a UPS between the meter and computer: ENERGY STAR computer measurement procedure. That is a controlled measurement approach; for a household estimate, the key is representative use over a meaningful period.
Include the inverter’s contribution
If you want the grid energy attributable to the PC and inverter together, measure the inverter’s AC input while the PC runs through it. Alternatively, measure the PC load and use the inverter’s efficiency at that load. Schneider Electric defines UPS efficiency as output electrical power divided by input electrical power; the difference is energy lost as heat. Efficiency varies with load, so a headline maximum is not necessarily the efficiency in your setup. Power flow also changes with operating mode. When mains power is available and an inverter passes power through, the grid draw can include standby or conversion overhead that varies by model and mode. During an outage, the battery supplies energy, and recharging it later incurs losses. There is no sound universal percentage to add for an unspecified inverter.
Apply the tariff that actually appears on your bill
India has no single household electricity rate that applies to every reader. The Ministry of Power says retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions, while state governments may provide subsidies to consumer classes. Identify your state, DISCOM and consumer category before estimating a rupee amount: Ministry of Power, Government of India, 10 August 2026.

The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation includes state- and category-specific schedules, fixed charges, energy rates and subsidies. Use the latest applicable tariff order or your current bill rather than treating a national per-unit assumption as universal: CEA tariff compilation.
A dated example: Chhattisgarh FY 2026–27

These are Chhattisgarh FY 2026–27 figures, not an India-wide rate. Under the schedule’s telescopic example, a 150-unit bill applies the first slab to the first 100 units and the next slab only to the remaining 50. The schedule separately lists monthly fixed charges per kW and notes that state subsidies may apply. Consult the Chhattisgarh FY 2026–27 tariff schedule for its full terms.
Estimate the bill impact, not just the energy charge
- Read the latest bill for your tariff category, slab structure and current charges.
- Calculate the PC-and-inverter system’s monthly units from measured AC input, or measure accumulated energy directly.
- Apply those additional units to the tariff’s actual structure. Check whether they move household consumption into a different slab.
- Compare the bill under the same schedule with and without the added units, including relevant fixed charges, duties, adjustments and subsidies.
This before-and-after approach is more useful than multiplying all new units by one rate when the tariff is telescopic or the household is near a slab boundary.
