Monsieur Spade has a strong hook: an older Sam Spade, retired in a French village, pulled into a murder mystery far from the world of The Maltese Falcon. Clive Owen gives the six-part series a thoughtful lead performance, and its setting has real atmosphere. The disappointment is that the mystery and its tonal mix do not always make good on that promise. That is a critical judgment, not a consensus: Rotten Tomatoes’ season page showed a 77% Tomatometer from 26 reviews and a 66% Popcornmeter from 100+ ratings when accessed in 2026, and those platform scores can change.
What is Monsieur Spade about?
AMC’s series follows Sam Spade, the detective at the center of Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel The Maltese Falcon, years after his best-known case. In 1963, a retired Spade is living in Bozouls, southern France, until the murder of six nuns at a nearby convent draws him into a mystery connected to a child believed to have special powers. It is a continuation featuring the familiar character, not a retelling of Hammett’s novel. AMC’s series description identifies Scott Frank and Tom Fontana as co-creators and writers, with Frank also directing; Owen stars and executive produces.
The premise brings together noir heritage, an American expatriate, a French village and a period mystery. That combination is the series’ chief attraction—and the expectation its plot has to meet.
Why does the series feel like a disappointment?
The central problem in the negative reviews is execution rather than the decision to revisit Spade. A mystery with such a distinctive setup needs to make its turns feel purposeful and its eventual payoff earned. Some critics instead found the story slow, difficult to follow or underwhelming at the resolution. The result can feel smaller than the idea that launched it.

Alan Sepinwall’s Rolling Stone review, dated January 16, 2024 and reproduced on Rotten Tomatoes, captured that gap: “It’s not terrible, but it’s a big disappointment, given the idea and the people involved.” Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus likewise praised Owen’s attention-commanding presence while saying the series struggles to live up to its lineage. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page also presents favorable reactions to the cast, writing, direction and nostalgic setting, alongside criticism of the pace and resolution.
The pacing is partly a matter of taste. Viewers seeking an atmospheric, leisurely mystery may enjoy its slow unfolding; those expecting the sharp propulsion or wit associated with Spade’s legacy may find the same approach glacial. The issue is whether the relaxed pace deepens the mystery enough to justify the time it takes.

How does Clive Owen’s Sam Spade compare with Humphrey Bogart’s?
Owen plays Spade as older and softer-edged: a retired man rather than the familiar hard-boiled figure in a hat and coat. In an AMC Talk interview published January 22, 2024, Owen said the creative team was deliberately engaging with masculine detective tropes: “I said the word for this show is ‘duped’ because it wasn’t the Sam Spade with the hat, the gun, the coat.” He also said he wanted the character to remain faithful to his origins in the book and film. That makes the comparison with Humphrey Bogart’s screen Spade less about impersonation than contrast. The series asks viewers to accept what time and retirement have done to the character. Owen’s presence gives that choice weight, but a reinterpretation also needs a story strong enough to make its differences feel revealing rather than merely familiar. The mixed response suggests the performance and premise land more consistently than the plotted payoff.

What works: Owen and the French setting
Owen anchors the series with a restrained performance suited to a detective who has stepped away from his old life. The French countryside and village setting offer a vivid counterpoint to the character’s American noir associations. Owen praised filming around Montpellier and in Bozouls, and described learning his French lines phonetically after studying the scenes in the same AMC interview. The location and period atmosphere give the show an identity beyond nostalgia for earlier Spade stories.
The tension is between an appealing mood and a mystery that some critics found hard to follow. French reviewer Thomas Sotinel of Le Monde found the meeting of American film noir and French crime drama intriguing, but argued that the series remained an idea that never cohered, getting lost in false leads and flashbacks. He also noted details that might strain credibility for French viewers. That is one critic’s local perspective, not evidence of a general French audience reaction. Sotinel’s review in Le Monde offers a useful account of how the cultural and genre blend can intrigue while still feel unresolved.

Is Monsieur Spade worth watching?
It is worth considering if you value Clive Owen’s take on an older detective, French locations and a slow-burn period atmosphere more than a tightly propelled mystery. If you want a crisp, consistently coherent whodunit—or a close match for the hard-edged Spade associated with Hammett and Bogart—the series may frustrate you. Its strongest case is the combination of performer, place and character; its weaker one is whether the plot turns that promise into a satisfying whole.
The reception is mixed-to-positive in the available aggregator snapshot, not uniformly negative. Rotten Tomatoes’ 77% Tomatometer (26 critic reviews) and 66% Popcornmeter (100+ ratings), accessed in 2026, are platform aggregates rather than a comprehensive survey of critics or viewers, and may change. AMC announced the six-part limited series for a January 14, 2024 premiere, with weekly episodes through the February 18 finale on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing accessed for this article showed AMC+ and Acorn TV for streaming and Fandango for purchase.
