The Most Famous Artist claimed in December 2020 to be behind some of the mysterious monoliths, but that claim did not establish who installed the Utah structure—or prove that one creator made them all. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) confirmed the Utah monolith was unauthorized and removed by unknown people on November 27, 2020; its installer was not identified in the agency’s account.
What did The Most Famous Artist claim?
On December 4, 2020, BleepingComputer reported that the pseudonymous collective The Most Famous Artist had claimed a connection to the monolith phenomenon and was offering custom versions for sale. The group’s Matty Mo told the publication: “I am not able to say much because of legalities of the original installation. I can say we are well known for stunts of this nature and at this time we are offering authentic art objects through monoliths-as-a-service.”
That is an attributed statement, not independent confirmation of authorship at a specific site. BleepingComputer noted that it was unclear whether the same person or group was behind the Utah and Romania objects, and questioned whether the claim proved the Utah installation. The reported offer was $45,000 for a 10-foot monolith, including installation; it was a 2020 asking price, not evidence of a completed sale or a current offer. (BleepingComputer’s December 2020 report)
Who made the Utah monolith?
The BLM’s official account does not name the installer. In a November 29, 2020, release, the agency said the structure had been installed without authorization on public land and that an unknown party or parties removed it on the evening of November 27. The agency said it had been investigating who installed it.

Monticello Field Manager Amber Denton Johnson said: “Even so, it was installed without authorization on public lands and the site is in a remote area without services for the large number of people who now want to see it.” The BLM statement confirms the object’s unauthorized status and removal, but does not verify The Most Famous Artist’s claim of responsibility. (BLM release, November 29, 2020)
Did one artist create all the monoliths?
The available location-specific accounts do not support treating the wave of monoliths as a single installation by one established maker. The Most Famous Artist’s claim was not proof about every site. The Isle of Wight object had a separate attribution: designer Tom Dunford told The Independent that he made it from materials at work, including mirrored perspex. That account concerns the Isle of Wight monolith, not the Utah one. (The Independent’s December 8, 2020, report)

Claims about one location should not be transferred to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did the BLM ask people not to visit the Utah site?
The site was remote and not equipped for heavy visitation. The BLM reported that visitors during Thanksgiving week parked on vegetation and left human waste; the area had no restrooms, parking lot, or cell service. The agency said high-clearance vehicles were required, noted that passenger vehicles had been towed, and advised the public not to attempt a visit. Its account is a warning about site conditions, not an invitation or set of directions. (BLM visitor advisory)
