Mo’Nique’s March 9, 2026, open letter to Whoopi Goldberg revisits their 2018 disagreement on The View over Mo’Nique’s refusal to travel overseas to promote Precious. Mo’Nique asks whether Goldberg’s opinion has changed—and whether she still believes she “schooled” her correctly.
What prompted Mo’Nique’s letter?
Mo’Nique posted the letter to Instagram on March 9, 2026, saying she had recently watched video of her last conversation with Goldberg on The View. She contrasted what she described as the tone of current comments with the energy of their exchange eight years earlier, then asked: “I wonder, have your feelings changed since that time?” TheWrap reported the letter and quoted its wording; TheGrio also covered the post.

What was the 2018 disagreement about?
Their on-air exchange concerned overseas promotion for the 2009 film Precious, directed by Lee Daniels. Mo’Nique said she had completed the promotion required by her agreement and did not owe additional unpaid international work. Goldberg disagreed with her position and said she could have “schooled” Mo’Nique about what was expected contractually. Mo’Nique replied that if she had breached a contract, she would have been sued. TheWrap and TheGrio recount the disagreement.
The available reporting gives the two women’s accounts of the expectations; it does not provide the contract or a legal finding establishing the scope of Mo’Nique’s obligations. The disagreement should therefore be understood as a dispute over what the parties believed her agreement required, not as a proven breach or fulfillment.

What new claims does the letter raise?
Mo’Nique’s account of a 1993 dispute
Mo’Nique invokes an alleged 1993 attempt to sue Goldberg over a verbal commitment to appear in the film Theodore Rex. In her account, Goldberg defended herself by saying she had not actually committed. This is an allegation recounted in Mo’Nique’s letter and reported by TheWrap; the coverage reviewed does not independently document the case.
Questions about professional relationships
Mo’Nique also speculates that Goldberg’s view may have been influenced by professional relationships involving former The View executive producer Candi Carter, Oprah Winfrey, or Tyler Perry. The letter does not establish that any of those relationships shaped Goldberg’s remarks.

Mo’Nique further says Perry privately acknowledged on audio that he was wrong to call her difficult to work with, and that he has not publicly corrected the characterization. Those are Mo’Nique’s claims as reported by TheWrap, not independently established findings.

At the center of the letter is whether Goldberg still stands by her 2018 criticism. Mo’Nique wrote, “The worst part is that another woman chastised me on a platform meant to empower women.” She also asked whether Goldberg would act differently for younger women coming up behind them, framing the question in deliberately forceful terms: “So, are you willing to do what’s right for the little girls coming behind us, or is your position still ‘F’ the little girl coming behind us?” TheWrap reproduced these lines from the letter.

The letter is a request for Goldberg to reflect on her earlier position; it is not evidence that Goldberg has changed it. At the time of its March 9 report, TheWrap said Goldberg’s representative had not immediately responded to a request for comment. Us Weekly said it had reached out on March 10. Us Weekly’s report and TheWrap’s coverage do not establish whether a response came later.
