Molly Ringwald’s reported 2026 comments were about remaking John Hughes films, not rejecting a Breakfast Club sequel. She said Hughes did not want his films remade and agreed with him; she would rather see a new story inspired by the original and shaped around a present-day generation. A separate report says Hughes once floated a sequel idea to Anthony Michael Hall, but that recollection does not establish a developed project—or Ringwald’s opposition to one.

What did Molly Ringwald say about remaking John Hughes films?

As reported by GEO.tv from a PEOPLE interview at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, Ringwald said Hughes did not want his films remade and that she agreed with his view. The report describes her preferred alternative as a new work inspired by The Breakfast Club, rather than a recreation of the original story. Because the exact PEOPLE wording is not available in the report, these points are best treated as paraphrase, not a verbatim quotation. GEO.tv’s account of Ringwald’s remarks

Is an inspired film the same as a remake or sequel?

No. The terms describe different relationships to the 1985 film: a remake retells its story; a sequel continues the story of its characters; an inspired film can borrow a premise or theme while creating a new story. Ringwald’s reported preference is for the third option, not a reproduction of the first film.

Type of follow-up What it means What the reporting establishes
Remake Retells the original film’s story, potentially with a new cast or setting. Ringwald has said she does not want the original remade, in interviews in 2015 and in the 2026 remarks reported by GEO.tv. Moviefone’s 2015 interview
Sequel Continues the original characters’ story in the same continuity. In 2026, The Daily Beast reported Anthony Michael Hall’s recollection that Hughes mentioned a possible sequel. The report does not establish a completed script or production. The Daily Beast’s account of Hall’s recollection
Inspired new film Uses a premise or theme as a starting point for a different story, without necessarily continuing the original characters’ lives. Ringwald has described this as a more interesting alternative, including a version with greater racial diversity. Moviefone’s 2015 interview

What did Ringwald say in 2015?

During the film’s 30th-anniversary coverage, Ringwald told Moviefone she did not think The Breakfast Club should be remade. She added that a film inspired by it could be interesting if it included more racial diversity. That earlier interview makes clear that her distinction between repeating the original and reworking its premise is not just part of the recent headline cycle.

Ringwald also described the theme that she believes gives the film its staying power. In a 2015 TIME interview, she said: “The theme is something that is still really relevant today, which is that no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, everyone kind of feels the same, which is that they don’t belong.” TIME’s interview with Ringwald

What is known about a possible sequel?

In August 2026, The Daily Beast reported Hall’s account that Hughes raised the possibility of a sequel in conversation. That is a recollection of an informal idea, not evidence that Hughes completed a script, that a studio developed a project, or that a sequel entered production. The available report does not say Ringwald was asked about this particular idea or opposed it.

The sequel story therefore should not be folded into Ringwald’s remake comments. Her reported position concerns preserving Hughes’s films from direct remakes and making a new, present-day story instead. Hall’s separate account concerns a possible continuation Hughes once mentioned.

Why can a new story draw on the original without copying it?

The Breakfast Club follows five high-school students from different social groups who spend a Saturday in detention. TIME describes how the students come to see common ground beyond their cliques. A contemporary film could take that basic setup or its feeling of alienation and build different characters, circumstances, and perspectives around it, rather than replay the same events. That approach also fits Ringwald’s stated interest in greater racial diversity. It would not be a continuation unless it brought back the original characters in the same story world, and it would not be a remake unless it retold the original’s story. The available reporting describes a preference, not a confirmed new film.
