The war between the Harrigans and the Stevensons begins with suspicion after Tommy Stevenson disappears and is found dead. It turns into open family conflict as Richie Stevenson retaliates and, later, the killing of his wife, Vron, makes the feud personal. Harry Da Souza, the Harrigans’ fixer, is left trying to contain violence that keeps widening.
Why are the Harrigans and Stevensons at war?
Season 1 is built around a violent rivalry between two London criminal families. Paramount+’s season explainer describes the Harrigans and Stevensons as rival dynasties, led by Conrad Harrigan and Richie Stevenson. Their conflict is not simply a contest for power: suspicion over a death turns into retaliation, and each escalation makes a wider war harder to avoid.

The first major rupture comes through Eddie Harrigan’s involvement with Tommy Stevenson. Tommy disappears and is later found dead. Richie suspects the Harrigans, setting the families against one another. The official explainer presents the season-level conflict, rather than a complete account of every scene or every character’s actions, so the central point is the consequence: Tommy’s death deepens Richie’s suspicion and puts Harry in the position of managing the fallout.
How the feud escalates
Tommy’s death sparks retaliation
Episode 3, “Plan B,” gives the conflict an early, concrete act of retaliation. According to episode recaps, Richie’s side blows up Kevin Harrigan’s empty house after Tommy’s death comes to light. The house is empty, but the attack makes the dispute visible: the Stevensons are no longer only suspecting the Harrigans; they are striking back.
#1 Best Overall
- A sheriff tries to keep the peace when a desperate family man violently robs a pill mill with his brother-in-law, alerting an enforcer for the New Orleans mafia.
Contemporary coverage described “Plan B” as the point where the gang war breaks out. That makes the episode a useful early marker, not the season’s sole turning point. The feud continues to escalate beyond the bombing.
Vron’s killing makes the war personal
Paramount+ identifies the later killing of Richie’s wife, Vron, as the decisive escalation that pushes the feud toward all-out war. Her death changes the conflict from suspicion and retaliation into a deeply personal vendetta for Richie. The season’s progression is therefore cumulative: Tommy’s death creates the suspicion, attacks answer it, and Vron’s killing drives the rivalry into open war.

Harry is the Harrigans’ fixer, but his role is not simply to carry out the family’s wishes. He repeatedly finds himself between loyalty to the Harrigans and the risk that their choices will unleash broader violence. As the feud intensifies, containing the consequences becomes increasingly difficult; the two families’ retaliation threatens to outgrow any one person’s ability to manage it.
Season-level recap, not an episode-by-episode account
The title’s “war explodes” captures the season’s arc rather than identifying one specific episode. “Plan B” supplies an early example of open retaliation, while Vron’s killing is the later event Paramount+ highlights as making the conflict personal and driving it toward all-out war. These are distinct stages in the feud, not competing explanations for when it begins.
