“The Red Gundam,” the officially titled first episode of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, makes an exciting and distinctly strange opening move: a high-school student in a space colony is pulled into a pursuit involving an unexplained mobile suit and ends up in the cockpit of the GQuuuuuuX. The official synopsis establishes an unusual premise, though “most bizarre Gundam anime so far” is a critical judgment—not a verified ranking or consensus.
What happens in GQuuuuuuX Episode 1?
The official Episode 1 synopsis introduces Amate, a high-school girl living in a space colony. She meets Nyaan, a courier, and becomes entangled with an illegal junk dealer. When military police try to capture the mysterious Red Gundam, Amate leaps into the GQuuuuuuX.
That is the spoiler-light outline: a meeting, a pursuit and a sudden step into a mobile suit. The synopsis does not explain the Red Gundam’s identity or resolve the episode’s mysteries, so the hook is the collision of ordinary colony life with a high-stakes military chase.
Why the opening feels exciting—and bizarre
The excitement comes from the premise’s quick change of scale. Amate’s introduction begins in everyday life, then the arrival of Nyaan and the illegal dealer draws her toward a conflict that brings military police and a mysterious Gundam into the picture. Her leap into the GQuuuuuuX is the decisive turn: she is no longer simply watching events unfold.

#1 Best Overall
- Part of the HG Series
- Bandai's newest "High Grade (HG)" model kit faithfully reproduces the new Gundam's distinctive form
- Loaded with articulation in the torso, hips, and elsewhere for dynamic posability after assembly!
- [Includes]: Weapons (x1 set) Backpack (x1 set) Interchangeable head part Interchangeable hands (x1 set) Stickers Marking stickers
The strangeness is in the combination the official setup presents: a courier, an illegal junk dealer, a pursued Red Gundam and a high-school student suddenly at the controls of another mobile suit. It is a distinctive setup, not evidence that the series is objectively the most unusual Gundam entry. The episode synopsis gives the premise, not a critical consensus or a basis for ranking the franchise.
How Episode 1 sets up the wider series
The series synopsis adds context to the episode’s sudden launch. Amate becomes involved in Clan Battle, an illegal mobile-suit dueling sport, and pilots the GQuuuuuuX under the entry name Machu. The broader setup also identifies Shuji as the pilot of a Gundam pursued by the space force and police.
