Lagaʻaia takes over the title role first voiced in the animated film by Auliʻi Cravalho. Johnson reprises Maui, the character he voiced in animation. Cravalho is an executive producer on the live-action film and performs the new song “Along The Way” with Lagaʻaia and Johnson.

Thomas Kail directed. Producers include Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The original songs are credited to Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, who also composed the score.

For its opening period, the Associated Press reported studio-estimated opening figures of $43 million in the U.S. and Canada, $52 million across 50 international markets, and $95 million worldwide. The AP also cited an A− CinemaScore and PostTrak survey responses in which 63% said they would definitely recommend the film and 78% of parents said they would recommend it to other parents. These are opening-period figures and survey results, not current cumulative box office or a measure of all viewers’ opinions.
