Would you ever lie in a coffin and then lay your soul bare? In a 2024 radio segment, Mix 94.5 breakfast presenters Pete Curulli and Kymba Cahill each spent five minutes in a coffin in the studio before answering questions about how they wanted to be remembered. Their reactions ranged from distress to initial comfort, making the segment a striking on-air reflection on mortality—not evidence that coffin therapy is an effective or safe treatment.
What happened on the Mix 94.5 show?
PerthNow reported on 11 March 2024 that real coffins were brought into the studio for Pete Curulli and Kymba Cahill. Each presenter lay in one for five minutes. Afterward, a therapist asked reflective questions. The studio exercise was brief; it was not the several-hour experience Kymba described when discussing the broader practice.
The report does not name the therapist or provide further details about their qualifications or the session’s setup.
How did Pete and Kymba react?
Pete described distress
Pete said, “I felt the most incredible change and went through some crazy feelings.” The report says he struggled to breathe and experienced full-body shakes. He also described the moment as suddenly confronting: “This all of a sudden became very confronting.” These are his reported experiences, not clinical findings.

Kymba felt comfort, then isolation
Kymba initially said, “In a way, it’s comforting,” but later described feeling lonely and isolated. The report presents her reaction alongside Pete’s, showing that the same short exercise affected the presenters differently.
What did they say about being remembered?
After the coffin sessions, the therapist asked, “What do you think people will remember you by standing around your coffin?” Kymba said she wanted people to feel they “all knew me — like actually knew me,” and to feel that she “stood for something.” Pete answered, “Just being a good person”; PerthNow also reported that he mentioned being a good father and husband.

Their answers shifted the segment from the physical experience of lying in a coffin to relationships, personal values and legacy.
Was this a longer coffin-therapy session?
No. The on-air exercise lasted five minutes for each presenter. Kymba described a longer version in which someone lies in a coffin for a few hours while family members share what they want to say, followed by a discussion with a therapist after the person is “resurrected.” That is Kymba’s description in the report; it does not independently establish a standard format used by practitioners.

Kymba also said the practice had been around since the 2000s and was offered by few clinics. The report gives no supporting source, clinic count or named organisation, so those statements should be understood as her claims rather than verified information about the practice’s history or prevalence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the segment establish—and what does it not?
The report documents one radio experience and the presenters’ personal reactions. It describes a reflective aim: considering what loved ones might say and what kind of person one hopes to be remembered as. It does not provide clinical evidence that coffin therapy is effective, establish that it is safe, or show how commonly it is offered. The presenters’ experiences should not be treated as proof of therapeutic benefit or as a clinical assessment of the activity.
