Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is not a comedy, but its earnest speeches, dense mythology and world-ending stakes can sometimes play as accidental humor. The eighth film’s spectacular action is a powerful counterweight: it delivers the kind of grand finale that can send viewers out exhilarated, even when the story’s solemnity slows its momentum.
Is The Final Reckoning worth watching?
Yes, if you want large-scale action and a sincere sendoff for Ethan Hunt; less so if you prize the series’ lighter, more effortlessly playful side. The film’s central tension is between spectacle and explanation. Its set pieces aim for the impossible, while long stretches of lore and speeches explain why the mission—and Ethan—matter.
That imbalance is the basis for calling it “a comedy in disguise”: not because the movie is designed as a comedy, but because its solemnity can become unintentionally funny. Associated Press critic Lindsey Bahr argues that reverence and serious developments sometimes tip into silliness, and that the effort to connect the franchise’s strands can make the film lose its plot. The Atlantic’s David Sims similarly finds that callbacks and explanatory monologues slow the action as the movie turns Ethan into an idealized figure.
There is a strong case on the other side. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus calls it “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope” and describes it as a sentimental sendoff that succeeds with characteristic flair. Bahr likewise praises the closing spectacle: “Saving the showstopper for last will certainly leave audiences exiting the theater on a happy high note.” The finale’s scale and payoff may be enough to outweigh the film’s talkier passages for viewers invested in the series.

What is the film about?
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the screenplay with Erik Jendresen, The Final Reckoning continues the story after 2023’s Dead Reckoning. Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, and his team confront a global threat connected to the Entity, an artificial intelligence that could bring about annihilation.
Paramount’s synopsis points to a mission involving a sunken Russian submarine, a biplane and an aircraft carrier. The returning ensemble includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny and Angela Bassett. The story also reaches back across the franchise, linking its current danger to the history of Ethan and his team.

Why does the movie’s sincerity sometimes feel funny?
The franchise history weighs on the present
The film wants its mythology to feel consequential. Familiar faces and callbacks are not just nods; they are part of an effort to make the finale feel like the culmination of a long-running story. But the more time the movie spends explaining those connections, the less room it leaves for the nimble momentum that has often made the series’ action so engaging.
Ethan becomes an emblem as well as a character
Sims’s criticism focuses on the film’s portrayal of Ethan as an almost idealized figure. That reverence can make the surrounding speeches feel unusually grand, especially when they pause a plot already dealing with a threat to the world. The result is a tonal mismatch: the movie asks for solemn attention while its action-adventure premise and audacious set pieces invite a more playful response.

The stakes are enormous, but the action is the release
The Entity gives the story a global, existential threat, yet the film’s most immediate pleasures come from physical jeopardy and spectacle. That contrast explains why the film can feel overblown in one scene and thrilling in the next. Its climactic showstopper is the clearest answer to the criticism: it offers kinetic payoff where exposition has held the story back.
Do the action and runtime justify the exposition?
At 179 minutes, according to the Associated Press, the film asks for a substantial time commitment. The central question is whether its elaborate action and emotional closure earn that length. If the appeal is seeing a long-running franchise assemble its pieces and end on a huge set piece, the scale is part of the attraction. If you mainly want brisk, cheeky momentum, the explanations and solemn pauses may feel like obstacles rather than buildup.

- The complete 2-movie collection of Tom Cruise's final Mission Impossible saga.
Reception reflects that divide. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 80% Tomatometer from 428 reviews and an 88% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings. Those are changeable aggregator snapshots, not fixed measures of quality; the contrast between critic and audience scores is consistent with a film whose action can win people over even when its storytelling choices divide opinion.

The Final Reckoning is the eighth Mission: Impossible film. Paramount’s series order is:
Best Value
- Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames
- Mission: Impossible (1996)
- Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)
- Mission: Impossible III (2006)
- Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
- Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
- Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023)
- Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)
Its direct story continuation from Dead Reckoning makes that film the most relevant one to watch first. The finale’s wider callbacks and franchise-spanning ambitions may also land better if you know the series, though the available information does not establish that every earlier installment is essential to follow the main threat.
How long is it, and what is its rating?
The Associated Press lists a runtime of 179 minutes and a PG-13 rating for bloody images, action, brief language and sequences of strong violence. That combination makes it a long action film with intense material, though the cited rating description does not suggest an adults-only release.
Where can you watch it?
Paramount said on December 4, 2025, that the film was streaming on Paramount+. Rotten Tomatoes also listed subscription viewing through Paramount+ and Prime Video, with rental or purchase through Fandango. Streaming catalogs and digital storefronts vary by territory and can change, so check your local service for current availability. Paramount’s dated streaming update is at Paramount+; the title and viewing listings are also on Rotten Tomatoes.
