The opening interrogation happens near the end of the story. Davian appears to shoot Julia, but the woman is a masked decoy; the real Julia is alive. Musgrave is the mole, while the film leaves the Rabbit’s Foot’s exact nature unexplained.
Why does the movie begin with Davian interrogating Ethan?
The opening is a flash-forward. Ethan is restrained, Davian demands the Rabbit’s Foot, and Julia appears to be in danger. The film then jumps back to Ethan’s engagement and his return to IMF field work to rescue his protégé, Lindsey. The screenplay opens on Davian’s demand, “The Rabbit’s Foot. Where is it.” Read the screenplay. A contemporary review also described the film as opening near its ending before flashing back to the engagement party. KPBS Public Media’s 2006 review.

How does Ethan’s mission lead to the opening?
- Berlin: Ethan and his team rescue Lindsey, but an explosive charge implanted in her head kills her. Her message and the ensuing investigation point Ethan toward arms dealer Owen Davian and his Vatican operation.
- The Vatican: Ethan’s team captures Davian, but an armed attack frees him during the transfer. Soon afterward, Julia is abducted, and Davian gives Ethan 48 hours to obtain the Rabbit’s Foot in Shanghai.
- Shanghai: Ethan retrieves the object and delivers it to Davian. The story catches up with the opening interrogation and its apparent execution of Julia.
Paramount’s synopsis identifies Ethan, Davian, Julia, the IMF team, and the Rome-to-Shanghai action in the film’s central conflict. Paramount’s Mission: Impossible III page.
Did Davian really kill Julia?
No. The woman Davian shoots is a masked decoy made to look like Julia. Musgrave reveals the deception after the apparent execution; the real Julia is still alive. That reveal resolves the opening’s apparent contradiction with the final rescue.

Why does Musgrave betray Ethan?
Musgrave is the mole. His cooperation gives him access and helps move the Rabbit’s Foot toward Davian. He says he wants Davian to sell it so the sale will create a pretext for a U.S. intervention. That is Musgrave’s stated motive within the film, not a claim about real-world policy.
What is the Rabbit’s Foot—and does Davian’s bodyguard reveal it?
The 2006 film presents the Rabbit’s Foot as dangerous and highly coveted, but does not explain its technical nature. It does not identify it as a particular virus, weapon, or computer system. Davian killing a failed bodyguard does not establish what the object is; the film’s plot turns on recovering and delivering it, not on explaining its workings.

Later franchise context adds information that the original film withholds. A 2025 CinemaBlend account of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning says the Rabbit’s Foot was early code used to create the Entity. That is a later-continuity explanation, not an answer supplied by Mission: Impossible III. CinemaBlend’s 2025 account.
