It was a public, ticketed event intended to promote nudism, but it also turned women’s appearance into a commercial spectacle. Its endpoint is uncertain: the history describes six annual summers, while a Toronto Star caption records a crowning in July 1977.
Where Miss Nude World began
The best-supported Canadian origin is Four Seasons Nature Park, located between Guelph and Hamilton, Ontario. Mary-Ann Shantz’s history of postwar Canadian nudism dates the pageant’s beginning there to 1970 and describes annual summer events for the next six years. Similar nudist-club contests had already taken place in California, Indiana and Florida between 1965 and 1969, so Miss Nude World was not the first naturist pageant.
The “World” in the name conveyed ambition more than a truly global field: the scholarly account says most contestants were Canadian or American. Winners of some other clubs’ Miss Nude contests were sent to compete, though qualification was not required.
What happened at the event
Unlike informal club pageants where fellow nudists chose a favorite by applause, Miss Nude World was a public, two-day contest with tickets for sale. Judges included local community members and minor celebrities. The format brought nudism before an audience beyond club members, while making contestants’ appearance a central part of the event.

A Toronto Star photograph caption reproduced in the Digital Archive Ontario catalog records a July 24, 1977 crowning: Brenda Holliday was named Miss Nude World and Cindy Youngman runner-up. The original caption reported about 5,000 spectators, 21 contestants and a three-hour spectacle. Those are figures from the newspaper caption, not an independently established long-term attendance statistic.
Why the pageant was both promotion and spectacle
Organizers presented the contest as publicity for nudism and as a more honest beauty competition. The scholarly account attributes this defense to Four Seasons owner and pageant producer Lisa Stein: “This is the most honest beauty contest there is. If you are beautiful in the nude then you are beautiful.” That was Stein’s justification, not a neutral description of what the contest meant.

The event’s public appeal also relied on spectators watching nude contestants and on judging women’s appearance. Its promotional purpose therefore coexisted with a gendered spectacle. It was also commercial: historical accounts describe ticket sales, advertising in the program, press attention and benefits claimed for Four Seasons. Publicity for a movement and commercial incentives were not mutually exclusive.
When did Miss Nude World end?
The endpoint cannot be stated confidently from the available records. Read straightforwardly, a 1970 start followed by events each summer for six years suggests a run ending in the mid-1970s. But the Toronto Star archive record documents a crowning in July 1977. The sources do not establish whether that was a later edition, a difference in how the annual run was counted, or an error in one account.

A separate Canadian trademark record shows that Dale Bohna filed an application for MISS NUDE WORLD PAGEANT in 1987; it was abandoned in 1989. The proposed service was described as an exotic entertainer contest and nude beauty pageant. That filing does not establish that the proposed service was the Four Seasons event, that the historical pageant continued into the late 1980s, or that the name has an active trademark today.
What the name does—and does not—tell us
Miss Nude World belongs in the history of postwar Canadian nudism, not just in a catalog of unusual contests. Nudist organizations sought public legitimacy and used publicity to promote their cause, while negotiating social respectability, sexuality and expectations about gender. The pageant makes those tensions visible: it offered a public argument for nudism while relying on the display and evaluation of women’s bodies.

Other archival references should not be mistaken for proof of a single continuous event. AANR West’s regional history mentions Treehouse and an annual Miss Nude World contest, but does not establish that it was the Four Seasons pageant. The American Nudist Research Library catalogs a 1980 Miss Nude Florida Pageant video intended to promote nudism; that is related context, not evidence that the Canadian event continued. Japan’s National Diet Library catalogs a 1981 Japanese-language volume titled The Best of Nude Gals: Miss Nude World Pageant Best 3, published by Tazawa Shobo. The catalog confirms the book’s bibliographic existence, not its detailed contents or current availability.
