The clearest confirmed change is the movie’s name: DC now calls it Supergirl, not Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. But DC still identifies Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the source comic. The first-look imagery signals Kara’s irreverent attitude; it does not confirm a change to DC Universe continuity.
What changed: the film’s title
DC’s official film page lists the movie as Supergirl. It was previously announced as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the title of the comic it adapts. The change is a shortened movie title—not evidence that DC has dropped the comic’s story or altered the film’s place in the DC Universe. DC’s film page and TheWrap’s trailer report establish the distinction.
What the first look says about Kara
DC’s production-look coverage describes a behind-the-scenes image of Milly Alcock reading the source comic and a teaser-poster image that offers a closer look at her suit. The poster also defaces Superman’s “Look Up” tagline. DC frames that visual gag as a sign of Kara’s irreverence, not as a plot revelation or a continuity announcement. DC’s first-look coverage explains the image and its intended character signal.
The comic remains the stated source
DC continues to identify Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the movie’s source. The shortened title therefore does not, on its own, establish that the adaptation has abandoned the comic. TheWrap reported that the film adds Lobo, a character absent from the original story; that is a specific comparison with the comic, not proof that the adaptation discards its broader premise.

What DC has confirmed about the movie
DC lists Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Craig Gillespie as director, and Ana Nogueira as screenwriter. The official premise says that after a ruthless adversary strikes close to home, Kara reluctantly joins an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. The listed cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. DC’s film page provides the credits, premise, and cast.
In a December 2025 DC interview, James Gunn, DC Studios co-CEO, said of the title, “The reasons are various, but the main one is when Ana Nogueira wrote the Woman of Tomorrow script, it was fantastic.” The comment supports a distinction between the movie’s title and its source material: DC retained the comic’s name as the adaptation’s reference even as the film itself became simply Supergirl. The interview also discusses Alcock’s interpretation of Kara.

How Alcock describes her Supergirl
Alcock describes Kara as a contrast to Clark Kent: she grew up on a dying planet and has lost everyone she knew and loved, leaving her cynical, guarded, and skeptical of others. Clark, she says, is more trusting and expects the good in people. That characterization fits the defiant tone of the poster, but it is Alcock’s description of the character—not confirmation that the movie changes DCU canon.

DC’s December 2025 article described Supergirl as the second movie in the new DC Universe after Superman and said the first teaser showed an intergalactic setting, Ruthye, and Jason Momoa’s Lobo. That later description provides more context about the film than the first-look image alone, but neither it nor the title change establishes a continuity overhaul. DC’s article covers the teaser and interview.
