Rob Pilatus, one half of Milli Vanilli, died in a Frankfurt-area hotel room in April 1998. The Washington Post reported his death on April 2 and gave his age as 32; later accounts, including a 2026 Guardian retrospective, say he was 33. Early reports said an autopsy was pending, while later retrospectives describe his death as an overdose. The available accounts do not establish a specific medical cause.
How did Rob Pilatus die?
The Washington Post reported that Pilatus died on April 2, 1998, in a hotel room in Frankfurt, Germany, and identified him as 32. A contemporaneous Associated Press report published by CBS on April 5 said an autopsy was being conducted to determine the exact cause. The Washington Post’s report and CBS’s AP report do not provide a final medical finding.

In accounts at the time, producer Frank Farian described Pilatus as drinking and taking tablets. Those remarks do not establish a cause of death. A later Guardian retrospective calls the death an overdose, but the sources available here do not include an autopsy report or identify a specific drug. The Guardian’s 2026 retrospective should therefore be understood as a later characterization, not a medical finding reproduced in the contemporary reports.
Was Rob Pilatus 32 or 33?
Published accounts disagree, and the discrepancy is not resolved by the available records. The Washington Post’s 1998 report gives Pilatus’s age as 32. The Independent obituary also says 32 and lists his birth date as June 8, 1965, and death date as April 2, 1998. The Guardian retrospective published in 2026 says he died at 33. The Independent’s obituary and the Guardian account use different ages; the dates printed by The Independent correspond to age 32.

So “dead at 33” reflects the age used by the title and by the later Guardian retrospective, while contemporary reporting and The Independent give 32. It is more accurate to attribute the competing ages than to present either as undisputed.
Why Pilatus remains associated with the Milli Vanilli scandal
Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan were the visible performers in Milli Vanilli, but other singers recorded the vocals on the duo’s records. In November 1990, Farian disclosed that the two men had not sung on the recordings. The revelation led to the group’s Best New Artist Grammy being rescinded, as contemporaneous accounts from The Washington Post and CBS/AP described.

A Los Angeles Times interview and report from the same period captures the pair’s account of their relationship with Farian and their roles in the project. Questions about what each person knew, and when, should be treated as claims by the interview subjects or executives rather than settled facts. The Los Angeles Times report provides that context. The scandal explains Pilatus’s lasting public association with Milli Vanilli, but the accounts cited here do not establish that it medically caused his death.
