Miley Cyrus did not have a publicly disclosed $300 million settlement payment. That figure was the amount of the copyright lawsuit brought by Michael May, the Jamaican artist known as Flourgon, over alleged similarities between Cyrus’s 2013 hit “We Can’t Stop” and May’s 1988 song “We Run Things.” The parties ended the case with a voluntary dismissal on January 3, 2020; the settlement terms were not made public in the reporting cited here.
What was the “We Can’t Stop” lawsuit about?
In March 2018, May sued Cyrus and others, alleging that “We Can’t Stop” used material from “We Run Things.” Reuters reported the comparison at the center of the claim as May’s “We run things. Things no run we” and Cyrus’s “We run things. Things don’t run we.” Those lyric similarities were allegations, not a court finding that Cyrus infringed copyright.
“We Can’t Stop,” from Cyrus’s album Bangerz, had peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2013, according to Reuters’ report republished by Yahoo News.
Did Miley Cyrus pay $300 million?
No public report cited here says that Cyrus paid $300 million. Reuters described $300 million as the amount of the lawsuit and reported that settlement proceeds were not specified. The settlement amount and other terms were not made public in the reporting reviewed, including The FADER’s January 4, 2020 report.

What did the court decide before the case ended?
On June 28, 2019, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled on part of the defendants’ motion to dismiss. It dismissed May’s claims for statutory damages, attorney fees, and damages for infringement before March 13, 2015, while denying dismissal in other respects. The ruling addressed which claims could proceed; it was not a trial or a decision that the song infringed copyright. The Justia docket for May v. Cyrus et al. records the court proceedings.
When was the lawsuit dismissed?
The docket records that the parties filed a stipulation of voluntary dismissal with prejudice and without costs on January 3, 2020, under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(a)(1)(A)(ii). A dismissal with prejudice ends the case and generally prevents the same claims from being brought again. It does not, by itself, establish that either side admitted liability.

Who is Flourgon?
Flourgon is the performing name of Michael May, the plaintiff who brought the copyright lawsuit. His 1988 song “We Run Things” was the work he said had been used in “We Can’t Stop.”
