Heartache with a soulful edge
The AP describes “Easy Lover” as a soulful heartache anthem. Apple Music’s description emphasizes its funk, a useful reminder that the song’s feel comes from more than a single genre. “More To Lose,” by contrast, is a ballad, giving the album a more direct, vulnerable center. The title track also leans into soul before its arrangement grows more forceful.
When the record rocks out
On the title track, Apple Music describes a Sunday-morning soul jam that gives way to prog-rock distortion. Pitchfork notes the track’s saxophone and muscular guitar turn. That escalation gives “rocks out” a concrete meaning here: the song changes scale and texture rather than keeping a steady soft-soul mood.

Electronic and collaborative detours
The AP points to an electronic shift in “Reborn” and “Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved,” widening the album’s palette beyond the title track’s guitar-driven finish. “Walk of Fame,” featuring Brittany Howard, adds another distinct voice to the sequence. These turns help explain why one review can praise the album’s stylistic range while another questions whether the pieces cohere.
How Cyrus describes making the album
In an Apple Music interview, Cyrus said she “felt free to make the album that I’ve really been craving my whole adult career to create.” She also recalled how its title emerged in the studio: after Max Taylor-Sheppard played a chord while she and Maxx Morando were working, she said, “Tell me something beautiful tonight.” The account links the title to a moment of collaboration rather than to a single track or fixed genre.

Cyrus also discussed a large polyp on her vocal cord, saying it had contributed to the tone and texture of her voice. She likened performing with it to “running a marathon with ankle weights on.” Those are Cyrus’s descriptions of her own condition and experience, not an independent medical assessment.
Pitchfork quoted Cyrus describing her visual ambition to Harper’s Bazaar as “making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.” That framing points toward a heightened, cinematic presentation, though it does not resolve the critical question of whether the album’s many styles form a unified whole.

Do critics agree about Something Beautiful?
No. The Associated Press review calls the album a “return to form” and emphasizes its range and continuity. Pitchfork’s review finds it tonally confused and thematically vague. These are contrasting judgments from individual critics, not a consensus. A listener who values shifts in mood and production may find the variety compelling; someone looking for a clearly unified sound or theme may share Pitchfork’s reservations.
Is Something Beautiful a visual album?
Yes. Columbia Records and Sony announced a full-length visual companion. It premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 6, 2025, followed by a one-night theatrical release in the United States and Canada announced for June 12. Disney later announced streaming on Disney+ and Hulu in the United States beginning July 16, 2025. The international Disney+ rollout began July 16 in Canada and July 30 in EMEA, Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
