The phrase came from an unnamed source described as a Cyrus source, speaking to People. ELLE and Glamour relayed the report; the original People item was not independently verified for this account. The source’s identity and specific role were not disclosed. The words should not be attributed to Cyrus or Carter as a public statement.
ELLE dates the report to September 2, 2019. It quotes the source as saying, “They live together and are very happy,” followed by comments that Cyrus was doing well, moving on, and liked being with Carter. ELLE’s relationship timeline and Glamour’s timeline both report the attribution.

- September 2: The Cyrus source reportedly said the pair lived together and were “very happy.”
- September 5: Glamour noted that neither woman had publicly commented on the relationship’s status as of that publication date.
- September 22: Glamour reported that a People source said they had broken up and were still friends.
Did Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter break up?
Yes. A September 22, 2019 Glamour report, citing a source who spoke to People, said Cyrus and Carter had broken up and remained friends. That later report superseded the earlier “very happy” description as an account of their relationship status. It does not establish anything about their present-day relationship.
Carter later offered her own retrospective description in an ELLE essay. As quoted in ELLE’s timeline, she wrote: “This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her.” That is Carter’s first-person account, distinct from the unnamed source’s earlier comments.
