Authorities initially suspected he had fallen from his boat, drowned, and been eaten by alligators. Years later, Brian Winchester confessed to killing him, and Williams’s remains were found at Carr Lake in 2017. The legal outcome is more complicated than the confession: Denise Williams’s murder and accessory convictions were overturned, but her conspiracy conviction remained.
What happened to Mike Williams while duck hunting?
Williams, 31, went duck hunting on Lake Seminole in Florida and did not return. Because he vanished on the water and his body was not found, investigators initially suspected an accidental drowning followed by an alligator attack. That was the early explanation, not what investigators ultimately treated as having happened.
For years, Williams’s disappearance remained unresolved. The case changed after Brian Winchester, who had sold Williams a life-insurance policy, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of his former wife, Kathy Thomas. WFSU reported that Winchester confessed to killing Williams in 2017 in exchange for immunity from murder prosecution and a 20-year sentence for kidnapping.
Did an alligator attack Mike Williams?
The alligator theory was the initial suspicion, based on the circumstances of Williams’s disappearance on the lake. It was not supported by a recovered body at the time: Williams’s remains were later found at Carr Lake, not in Lake Seminole. ABC News reported that authorities found the remains in 2017 and treated the disappearance as a homicide.

Winchester’s account, as reported in court coverage, was that he pushed Williams from the boat and shot him after he surfaced. That is Winchester’s confession and account of the killing; it should not be confused with an independently uncontested reconstruction of every detail.
What did investigators and jurors hear about the case?
The investigation reopened after Winchester’s kidnapping arrest. He testified about the killing and his relationship with Denise Williams. ABC News reported his trial testimony that “He was panicking and I was panicking,” and quoted him describing his relationship with Denise as “We were Bonnie and Clyde.” Those are Winchester’s own characterizations.

ABC News reported that Williams had purchased a $1.75 million life-insurance policy sold by Winchester six months before he disappeared. That figure is ABC News’s reporting, not a court finding by itself. In 2018, a jury found Denise Williams guilty of conspiracy, first-degree murder, and accessory after the fact. The surviving legal result must be distinguished from the jury’s original verdict.
What happened to Denise Williams?
Florida’s First District Court of Appeal overturned Denise Williams’s murder and accessory-after-the-fact convictions. Her conspiracy conviction remained in place, and in September 2021 a judge resentenced her to 30 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder, according to WFSU.

So Denise Williams does not currently have a murder conviction in this case. ABC News reported in 2025 that no one had been convicted of Mike Williams’s murder. Winchester confessed but received immunity from prosecution for the murder in exchange for information and a kidnapping sentence; the surviving conviction against Denise is for conspiracy.
How did Kathy Thomas help investigators?
Kathy Thomas, Winchester’s former wife, helped investigators by recording a conversation with Denise Williams in 2018. ABC News reported this recording as part of the evidence and investigation surrounding the case. Its significance belongs in that evidentiary context; it does not change the distinction between Denise’s surviving conspiracy conviction and her overturned murder and accessory convictions.

- 1. LIFELIKE DRAKE & HEN PAIR – Two 13-inch mallard decoys – one classic green-head drake and one light hen – hand-painted with textured, polished feather detail that reads true from a distance. Reviewers consistently call them "very lifelike" and "exactly as advertised." The full-profile body is visible to passing waterfowl at range while staying light enough to pack into remote ponds and sloughs.
- 2. WEIGHT-FORWARD SWIM KEEL – The balanced keel design rocks, glides, and turns with breeze and current, mimicking the natural motion of a live duck on the water instead of sitting stiff. For calm ponds and small lakes the pair performs out of the box; in stronger wind or current, the keel accepts added ballast (sand or fishing weights) so you can tune each decoy to your water conditions in minutes.
- 3. PREMIUM PE CONSTRUCTION – Made from high-quality polyethylene that is tougher and more deformation-resistant than standard plastic decoys. UV-resistant paint holds its color through sun, rain, and frost without flaking or fading, season after season. The flexible shell bounces back from knocks that would crack hollow budget floaters.
- 4. DUAL PURPOSE – HUNTING SPREAD OR POND ACCENT – Start your first decoy spread with this confident pair, or add them to an existing rig as a realistic confidence set. Off-season, they double as a lifelike pond, pool, or garden accent that brings a touch of nature to any water feature – one pair, two uses, all year round.
- 5. READY TO FLOAT, EASY TO STORE – No assembly, no anchors required for calm water – place them on the water and they ride naturally. Compact 13-inch profile stacks into any standard decoy bag for transport. Backed by Cifavor's responsive customer support and hassle-free replacement for any defect. A practical gift for new hunters, pond owners, and wildlife photographers.
Why the case is still discussed
The case turned on a sharp contrast between the first explanation—a presumed accident and possible alligator attack—and the later homicide investigation built around Winchester’s confession, testimony, and the discovery of Williams’s remains. The criminal outcomes also require care: a confession and a jury’s original verdict do not mean that every conviction remained in force. ABC News reported in 2025 that the case was the subject of its four-part series Mr. & Mrs. Murder, streaming on Hulu.
