In the interview immediately afterward, Tyson turned his attention to Lennox Lewis, delivering inflammatory threats that became the bout’s enduring headline. The “greatest interview ever” wording is best treated as an editorial description, not a verified quotation from a named source.
What happened in Tyson’s 38-second fight?
Tyson fought Lou Savarese in Glasgow on June 24, 2000. The bout was stopped by technical knockout 38 seconds into the first round, according to BBC Sport’s 2020 retrospective and contemporaneous ESPN/Associated Press reporting.
The ending was not simply a clean, uncontested stoppage. Tyson continued punching as referee John Coyle moved in to intervene. Savarese later recalled that he was unsure what was happening: “I didn’t think the fight was over, I just thought he got disqualified or whatever.” He described the scene as “pandemonium” and remembered Tyson still throwing punches while the referee was between them. Those are Savarese’s recollections in a BBC interview published in 2020, twenty years after the bout—not a finding that the referee erred.
What did Tyson say in the post-fight interview?
Interviewed by Jim Gray, Tyson shifted the focus from Savarese to Lennox Lewis, the heavyweight champion he wanted to fight. ESPN’s later account identifies Gray as the interviewer; contemporaneous ESPN/AP coverage reported Tyson’s threats, including: “I want your heart. I want to eat your children.” In context, the remarks were inflammatory fight rhetoric aimed at Lewis, not a description of the bout with Savarese.

The available reporting establishes the substance of the Lewis remarks, but not a full verified transcript of the original broadcast. “Greatest interview ever” captures the segment’s later notoriety; the sources cited here do not establish who first used that phrase or when.
Why did the officials review Tyson’s conduct?
The controversy had two related parts: Tyson’s continued punches as Coyle intervened, and his remarks about Lewis afterward. ESPN/AP reported on June 27, 2000, that the British Boxing Board of Control was reviewing the incident and comments. A separate ESPN report covered the review and the referee’s account.

BBC Sport’s 2020 retrospective says Tyson was fined £125,000 for failing to obey the referee’s instructions and formally reprimanded for his post-fight comments about Lewis. The BBC’s account distinguishes the penalty for not following the referee’s instructions from the reprimand over the interview; the fine should not be described as imposed solely for what Tyson said to Gray.

The contrast made the moment unusually striking: a fight over in seconds, a confusing and controversial stoppage, then a post-fight exchange in which Tyson immediately challenged the attention toward Lewis. The interview became part of the story of the Glasgow bout, but it should not obscure Savarese or the disputed way the contest ended. ESPN’s retrospective on Tyson’s return to boxing places the segment within his broader career.
