Douglas began by jabbing and moving, then stood his ground when he realized he could read Tyson’s attacks. His sustained offense damaged Tyson’s left eye and wore him down before Douglas stopped the undefeated champion in the 10th round in Tokyo.
How Douglas took control of the fight
Tyson entered the bout 37–0 with 33 knockouts, while Douglas was a major underdog. ESPN later reported that one sportsbook listed Douglas at 42-to-1 odds; that figure reflects that sportsbook, not a universal price. ESPN’s anniversary retrospective gives the record and odds context.
Douglas opened with a jab and movement, keeping distance from Tyson’s right hand. The Washington Post reported that Douglas won the first two rounds with clean combinations and noted his greater weight and reach. The Post’s fight report describes that early work.
The adjustment that changed the rhythm
Douglas later said he could see Tyson’s punches coming clearly, so he stopped moving and began countering from in front of him. In a report published the day after the bout, the Los Angeles Times quoted Douglas: “I was showing him movement in the early rounds, but after a while I realized I could see his shots coming, clearly.” He added, “So I stopped moving.” The Los Angeles Times account records his explanation.

That adjustment let Douglas meet Tyson’s rushes with punches of his own instead of giving ground indefinitely. The Times reported that Tyson’s left eye was almost completely closed by the end of the ninth round. In the 10th, Douglas landed a sustained combination that ended the fight, as the Washington Post also reported.
What happened after Tyson knocked Douglas down?
Tyson hurt Douglas with an uppercut and knocked him down in the eighth round. Tyson’s camp argued that Douglas had been down longer than the count allowed, and boxing officials reviewed the count. The Washington Post reported concern from the Japanese Boxing Commission and quoted WBC head Jose Sulaiman saying, “There was a violation of the rule.” The Los Angeles Times also covered the protest and review.

The count dispute is part of the fight’s history, but it does not establish that the result was overturned or invalid. Douglas recovered, returned for the ninth and fought strongly before stopping Tyson in the 10th. The contemporary reports document the controversy; they do not establish that it changed the official outcome.
Was Tyson’s preparation or personal life the real reason?
Accounts about Tyson’s condition are less conclusive than the evidence of what happened in the ring. The Los Angeles Times reported speculation from an unidentified sparring partner that Tyson was over-trained. Douglas’s trainer, J.D. McCauley, instead argued that Douglas’s punches explained Tyson’s unsteady legs. Neither statement is an independently established medical finding or proof of a single cause.

The Times also reported that Douglas had lost his mother shortly before the fight and wanted the victory for her. That helps explain his motivation, but it does not replace the tactical account: Douglas landed effective punches, adjusted to Tyson’s attacks and kept working until Tyson could no longer answer.
Douglas later credited his experience with helping him recover after being hurt: “My experience took over, knowing how to handle being hurt.” He also said Tyson had not faced that situation before and could not handle it. Those are Douglas’s post-fight judgments, not neutral proof of Tyson’s mental state.

Was the Douglas victory a fluke?
The result was a major upset, but the contemporary accounts describe a fight Douglas won through sustained, visible work rather than one lucky moment. He used movement and a jab early, changed tactics when he could read Tyson’s punches, and kept landing clean shots. Tyson’s eighth-round knockdown of Douglas made the bout more dramatic, and the count was disputed, but the reporting reviewed here does not support treating that dispute as proof that Douglas did not win.
