The identification comes from the repost’s description, not a verified original archive, and the bout’s exact date has not been established. Tyson was 15 only after June 30, 1981; earlier that year, he was 14.
Is the young boxer really Mike Tyson?
The available identification traces to a VideoMan repost published May 16, 2018. Its description says the footage shows Tyson, then 15, fighting Joe Cortez during the 1981 Junior Olympic championships. That is a secondary caption, not an original event record or independently authenticated identification. The repost does not establish the footage’s original owner, recording date, or whether it has been edited. VideoMan’s repost
There is supporting context for the matchup: the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame lists Tyson as the 1981 U.S. Junior Olympic heavyweight champion and includes Joe Cortez among his results. Its biography also records Tyson’s birth date as June 30, 1966. The Hall of Fame record corroborates the broader competition context, but does not prove that this particular clip is authentic or identify its date. New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame biography
Was Tyson 15 when the bout happened?
Tyson turned 15 on June 30, 1981. He was 14 before that date and 15 afterward. Since the circulating clip’s bout date has not been reliably confirmed, the most accurate description is that the repost presents him as a 15-year-old Tyson—not that the footage’s exact date or his age on that day has been verified.

Who was Joe Cortez?
Cortez is named as Tyson’s opponent in the VideoMan caption, and the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame lists a result against Cortez among Tyson’s amateur bouts. The available evidence supports naming him as the opponent associated with the clip, while the repost itself remains the source of the specific visual identification.
Why does the clip strike viewers as frightening?
“Frightening” is a reaction to the footage, not an objective description established by a record of the bout. The Hall of Fame lists Tyson’s amateur record as 48–6 and records his 1981 Junior Olympic heavyweight title, but those career facts do not authenticate a short repost or establish what happened in every moment of the bout.

Tyson later reflected on the gap between his ability and experience in an interview with The Ring: “I didn’t have the experience to beat those guys, even though I was beating them. I would have been able to knock them out if I had the experience.” The Ring also describes him as a Junior Olympic gold medalist in 1981 and 1982 and the 1984 National Golden Gloves champion.
