Mike Jeffries’ lawyers said in December 2024 court filings that a neuropsychologist had assessed him with dementia with behavioral disturbance, Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. Those were diagnoses reported by the defense, not independently confirmed findings. In August 2026, a federal judge ruled that Jeffries was competent to stand trial—a separate legal decision that does not determine guilt or disprove the reported diagnoses.
What Jeffries’ lawyers said about his health
In December 2024 filings, Jeffries’ defense lawyers said a neuropsychologist who examined him in October had assessed him with dementia with behavioral disturbance, Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. The lawyers argued that his cognitive impairments could prevent him from assisting in his defense. The diagnosis descriptions and the argument about his ability to proceed were presented by the defense, based on the cited expert assessment. December 2024 report
How the competency question changed
The 2025 request for evaluation
In April and May 2025, prosecutors and defense counsel jointly represented that Jeffries was not competent at that point and sought hospitalization for evaluation and possible treatment. That was their procedural position then; it was not the court’s final determination. 2025 court filings
The judge’s August 2026 ruling
In August 2026, Judge Nusrat Choudhury found Jeffries competent to stand trial after reviewing expert reports, testimony, evaluations and recorded calls from his stay at the federal medical facility in Butner. The ruling focused on whether he could understand the proceedings and assist in his defense. Choudhury wrote that Jeffries had “a rational and factual understanding of the proceedings,” and that his presentation, evaluations and calls showed an understanding of the legal system, courtroom procedures, participants and key legal concepts. The ruling also said that even if Jeffries had Alzheimer’s disease or Lewy body dementia, a diagnosis by itself would not decide competency. The judge’s finding addressed his ability to proceed in court; it was not a finding on whether the prosecution’s allegations are true, and it did not establish that the defense-reported diagnoses were false.
What prosecutors allege
According to Associated Press reporting on the indictment, prosecutors alleged that Jeffries and co-defendants Matthew Smith and James Jacobson used promises of modeling opportunities to lure men to sex events in New York City, the Hamptons and other locations. The December 2024 report described 15 accusers and allegations concerning events from 2008 through 2015, including events outside the United States. These are allegations, not established facts. The defendants pleaded not guilty, AP reported in August 2026. December 2024 AP report August 21, 2026 AP report
