Who is Mike Hall from Rust Valley Restorers?
Mike Hall is the central figure in Rust Valley Restorers, a series set in the South Shuswap region of British Columbia. Corus Studios describes the area as a community in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with a distinctive car culture, and places Hall’s restoration shop at the heart of the program. The show follows Hall, his friend Avery Shoaf, and his son Connor as they restore, trade, and sell classic cars. How did Mike Hall get into car restoration?
Hall’s account of the show’s beginnings starts with a different kind of heavy work. In a 2024 interview with Collision Repair Mag, he said he worked ten months a year in rock blasting. During the two cold months in British Columbia when he could not do that work, he collected old cars.
Hall recalled that the collecting eventually left him with 400 cars on his lot. That number is his retrospective account, not an independently verified inventory or a description of how many cars he owns today. He explained that his collection became the link between his off-season hobby and the television project.

How did Rust Valley Restorers begin?
Hall says the initial television idea was about rock scaling, the work of removing loose rock from slopes. Producers looked into the red tape and liability involved, then learned about his car collection. In Hall’s telling, the concept shifted from rock work to car restoration once they discovered the old cars.
The change connected Hall’s day job and his off-season collecting to a series with a broader cast and setting. Rather than presenting restoration as a solo undertaking, the program’s official description centers on Hall, Shoaf, and Connor working together to restore, trade, and sell cars in the South Shuswap.

What does Hall recommend to people who want to restore cars?
Hall’s practical advice in the Collision Repair Mag interview is to learn welding and the fundamentals before taking on restoration projects. As he put it: “if you’re serious about restoring cars, learn to weld! Learn the basics.” It is a concise recommendation from Hall, not a claim that welding alone qualifies someone to complete every kind of restoration.
