Mike Flanagan’s latest released Stephen King adaptation is Carrie, an eight-episode series that began streaming on Prime Video on October 7, 2026. Based on King’s 1974 debut novel, it places Carrie White’s return to public school and emerging telekinetic powers in a modern social context. The title’s promise that it “breaks genres and hearts” is best read as promotional framing, not an established critical consensus.
What is Mike Flanagan’s new Carrie?
Carrie adapts Stephen King’s debut novel, first published in 1974. In Amazon’s series premise, Carrie White is a misfit high-schooler who has lived in seclusion with her protective mother, Margaret. After her father’s death, she faces public school, where a bullying scandal is amplified by social media, as telekinetic powers begin to emerge. The story unfolds over eight episodes and builds toward what Amazon calls a “single, shattering night.” Amazon’s series overview
That premise brings horror together with adolescence, cruelty, and social pressure, but the official material cited here does not assign the series a formal genre label. Nor does it establish that viewers or critics agree it “breaks hearts.” Those are interpretive descriptions, not reported audience findings.
Where can you watch Carrie?
All eight episodes are streaming exclusively on Prime Video. Amazon reported availability in more than 240 countries and territories when the series launched on October 7, 2026; access and membership terms may vary by location. Check Prime Video for current regional availability.

How does Flanagan describe his approach to earlier adaptations?
Flanagan has said he wanted to make a new work from the source material rather than simply repeat what earlier adaptations had done. In a July 16, 2026 first-look article, TechRadar quoted him: “The only way to approach it was to build something new out of the ingredients of Carrie. Otherwise, there’s really no purpose in trying to retread ground that’s been so beautifully walked before.” TechRadar’s first look at the series

That statement explains his creative intention; it does not, by itself, establish specific plot changes. The grounded points of comparison are format and context: the new adaptation is an eight-episode series with a modern setting, while King’s source is a 1974 novel and Brian De Palma directed a 1976 film adaptation. A detailed scene-by-scene comparison would require evidence beyond these release and first-look materials.
