Tom Breihan’s 2017 ranking of the year’s 40 best rap albums puts Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. at No. 1, Migos’ Culture at No. 2 and Roc Marciano’s Rosebudd’s Revenge at No. 3. Published by Stereogum on December 11, 2017, it is one critic’s year-end list—not an objective ranking or a statement of today’s consensus.
What the ranking is—and what it is not
Breihan presented the list as his personal selection, distinct in some respects from Stereogum’s broader year-end album list. Its order records his critical judgment at the close of 2017. Read it as a snapshot of how one writer assessed that year’s rap, rather than as a definitive measure of quality or a current poll.
The list’s appeal lies partly in the range it brings together: Atlanta trap, underground rap, a collective’s densely populated sound, and albums taking sharply different approaches to production and performance. Breihan’s comments point to contrasts in vocal style, atmosphere, reach and album-making—not to a formal scoring system.
The top five albums
- Kendrick Lamar — DAMN. (#1). Breihan hears a combination of introspective writing and cinematic bravado. His description places the album in a moment when Lamar was reaching broad audiences through festivals, arenas and chart success; those are contemporaneous observations in the review, not independently established measurements here.
- Migos — Culture (#2). Breihan focuses on the group’s triplet flows, unusual vocal phrasing and the interplay among its three members. He regards the album as the fullest expression of their style at that point.
- Roc Marciano — Rosebudd’s Revenge (#3). The write-up connects Marciano’s sound to a self-produced underground lineage, emphasizing hazy beats and a film-noir atmosphere.
- Brockhampton — Saturation II (#4). Breihan highlights the collective’s energy, distinct personalities and abundance of ideas.
- Vince Staples — Big Fish Theory (#5). He describes its move toward futuristic, techno-influenced production as a daring change in direction.
Other placements to know
Several other widely recognized names appear further down Breihan’s order. Their positions are worth distinguishing from the top five: inclusion in this list does not mean they ranked near its summit.
