Midnight in the Switchgrass is a 2021 crime thriller about an FBI investigation into sex trafficking that intersects with a serial-killer case. Directed by Randall Emmett, it stars Megan Fox, Bruce Willis and Emile Hirsch. Although listings describe it as “based on the true story,” the available sources do not establish the real case or how closely the film follows it; it is a thriller, not a documentary or a verified account of a specific case.

The film’s sales-catalog synopsis and streaming listings use “based on the true story” language. Those descriptions do not identify the historical case or substantiate how the movie relates to it, so that phrase should be understood as promotional listing language rather than proof of a faithful real-crime account. Highland Film Group provides the synopsis and credits.

The film’s US limited theatrical and streaming release is listed as July 23, 2021. Apple TV and Rotten Tomatoes give its runtime as 99 minutes (1 hour 39 minutes); Swank’s catalog lists 98 minutes, a one-minute difference between listings. Swank is the source of the shorter catalog runtime.
What is the rating and content advisory?
Apple TV and Rotten Tomatoes list the US film as R for violence and language throughout. The UK classification is separate: the BBFC flags strong language, violence, threat, injury detail, sexual threat and brief verbal references to suicide. Its content advice also describes abduction, prolonged hostage threat, drugging and murdered bodies with injury detail. These details are useful for deciding whether the film is suitable for you, but the BBFC guidance is a UK classification, not a universal rating.
How was Midnight in the Switchgrass received?
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film had an 8% Tomatometer score from 38 critic reviews and a 20% Popcornmeter score from fewer than 50 verified ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are a dated snapshot and may change as the site updates its scores. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics consensus calls the film “Dull and predictable,” while noting its setting and performances; that is the site’s editorial summary, not a statement from a named critic.
