For a straightforward YouTube broadcast, use YouTube’s webcam or mobile option; for more control over a produced show, use an encoder such as OBS Studio or a hosted studio such as StreamYard. You can also keep Teams in the workflow: Microsoft documents RTMP-In and SRT-In for current Teams meetings and events, subject to your organization’s policy and event setup. Teams live events retired on June 30, 2026, so they are not the route for newly planned events.
What changed in Microsoft Teams
Microsoft’s encoder guidance covers Teams meetings and events: an organizer enables RTMP-In or SRT-In in the relevant meeting policy and event options, then sends the encoder’s output to the endpoint Teams provides. RTMP-In supplies an RTMP(S) URL and stream key; SRT-In supplies an SRT URL. Microsoft lists OBS Studio and StreamYard among validated encoders. That listing is compatibility guidance, not a ranking of ease, cost, or quality. Microsoft’s encoder guidance has the current setup details.
The legacy Teams live-events experience retired June 30, 2026. Microsoft says events scheduled before that date are supported through February 28, 2027, and points organizers toward its unified Teams events experience. Avoid relying on instructions for the retired live-events interface when planning a new broadcast. See Microsoft’s live-events support page for the legacy experience and retirement notice.
Choose a workflow for the broadcast you want
| Option | Best fit | Production and setup | Destination notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube webcam or mobile | A simple solo presentation using a camera and microphone already available. | YouTube offers webcam and mobile methods as alternatives to an encoder. Enable live streaming ahead of time if this is your first broadcast. | Direct YouTube workflow. |
| OBS Studio | A creator who wants software-based production control, such as screen content or multiple inputs. | OBS is a software encoder Microsoft lists as validated for Teams. YouTube describes encoder workflows for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware, and more advanced production. | Can be used as an encoder in a YouTube workflow; it can also feed Teams when the relevant Teams input is enabled. |
| StreamYard | A creator who prefers a hosted studio workflow, or wants to keep Teams as a meeting hub while producing a stream. | Microsoft lists StreamYard as a validated Teams encoder. StreamYard describes connecting to Teams via RTMP and sending to YouTube and other destinations; that workflow description is from the vendor. | Destination handling depends on the chosen service workflow. The cited vendor article describes YouTube and other platforms. |
| Teams meeting or current Teams event plus encoder | A broadcast where meeting interaction and the organization’s Teams setup remain central. | Requires the applicable meeting policy and event options to permit RTMP-In or SRT-In. Configure and test the endpoint before going live. | Teams receives the encoder feed; configure the intended YouTube destination in the encoder or production workflow. |
| StreamNeo | A prerecorded YouTube channel stream that should keep looping without a computer running at home. | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | YouTube only; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo. |
How to choose
- Choose YouTube webcam or mobile for a simple, direct presentation without a separate production workflow.
- Choose OBS Studio if you need encoder-based control over screen content, external sources, or a more involved production.
- Consider StreamYard if a hosted studio approach suits you. Its Teams-to-YouTube description is vendor-authored, so verify the workflow and current service terms for your own needs.
- Keep Teams in the chain when meeting interaction matters and your organization enables RTMP-In or SRT-In for the meeting or event.
- Use StreamNeo for an always-on loop of uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera broadcast.
YouTube identifies webcam, mobile, and encoder methods in its encoder live-streaming guide. It says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours; after enablement, a stream can go live instantly. Plan that lead time before your first scheduled broadcast.

Prepare and test before going live
- Confirm YouTube access: enable live streaming in advance, especially for a first broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement according to YouTube.
- Pick the production path: decide whether you are broadcasting directly from YouTube, using an encoder, using a hosted studio, or routing an encoder into Teams.
- If using Teams, check administration first: ask the meeting or event organizer to confirm the applicable policy and event options allow RTMP-In or SRT-In. Generate the endpoint and use the URL and key (for RTMP-In) or URL (for SRT-In) supplied for that event.
- Protect the stream key: treat it as a credential. Share it only with the people and software that need it, and avoid exposing it in a public recording or screenshot.
- Run an end-to-end test: check picture, audio, destination, and the Teams-to-encoder connection if applicable before the scheduled broadcast. Fix issues before the audience arrives.
Equipment: buy only to solve a real gap
YouTube describes external audio and video hardware as an encoder use case, not a universal requirement. If your existing microphone and camera are adequate, you may not need more equipment. A USB microphone is one possible category to consider if you need dedicated audio input; neither YouTube nor Microsoft’s cited guidance endorses a particular model. Microsoft also lists dedicated hardware encoders, which are an option for productions that need them rather than a prerequisite for every creator.
