Microsoft has released the source code for Zork I, Zork II and Zork III under the MIT License. That makes the specified code available to use, modify and redistribute under the license’s terms; it does not make every part of the games, their branding or commercial packaging free to reuse.
What Microsoft made available
On November 20, 2025, Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office, Team Xbox and Activision announced the relicensing of source code for the three classic text adventures. Rather than creating new repositories, Microsoft submitted upstream pull requests to the historical source repositories to add the MIT license and document the grant. The historical repository organization describes its collection as historical source code and lists Zork among its projects: The Infocom Files on GitHub.

Microsoft describes Zork’s origins in a mainframe game that was too large for early home computers. Infocom split it into three games and used the Z-Machine virtual-machine specification so story files could be interpreted on different computers. The announcement is about the source code for Zork I, Zork II and Zork III, not a blanket release of everything associated with the franchise. Microsoft’s announcement also credits Jason Scott and the Internet Archive for their long-running stewardship and partnership.
What the MIT license lets you do—and what it does not
The MIT License permits users to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense and sell copies of the covered code. The license requires retaining its copyright and permission notice in copies or substantial portions, and provides the code “AS IS,” without warranty. The cited Zork III repository contains the license text with a 2025 Microsoft copyright notice: Zork III repository license.

Microsoft’s announcement explicitly excludes commercial packaging and marketing materials, does not grant rights to trademarks or brands, and excludes assets outside the titles’ source code. In practical terms, permission to work with the code is not permission to use Zork names or logos as your own branding, reproduce the commercial packaging, or assume that every associated game asset is covered.
How to play: packaged release or source-based route
There are two different paths, depending on whether you want a ready-made commercial release or want to work with the code. Microsoft says the packaged Zork Anthology remains commercially available on GOG. For a source-based route, the announcement describes using ZILF to compile zork1.zil, then zapf to assemble a runnable Z-Machine file and an interpreter such as ZLR to play it. It also mentions Windows Frotz and other Z-machine runners.

|---|---|---|
| Packaged Zork Anthology on GOG | Someone who wants a commercially packaged way to play. | Microsoft identified it as commercially available in its November 20, 2025 announcement. The announcement does not establish a current price or detailed platform compatibility. |
| Compile and run the source | Someone interested in studying or modifying code, or building a runnable story file. | Microsoft outlines a tool-based workflow involving ZILF, zapf and a Z-Machine interpreter. Check each project’s current instructions for exact commands and compatibility; the announcement does not provide a platform matrix. |
The source-based option involves more setup than using a packaged release, but it gives developers and students a way to explore the code itself. Microsoft OSPO director Stacey Haffner described the aim as putting historically important code in the hands of students, teachers and developers “so they can study it, learn from it, and, perhaps most importantly, play it.”

The source code for Zork I, Zork II and Zork III is MIT-licensed. That does not mean every edition, game asset or branded product is free, nor does the announcement establish that the packaged commercial release costs nothing. If you mean “Can I use or modify the released code?”, the MIT grant allows that subject to its notice requirement. If you mean “Can I download the complete commercial games or reuse their branding and assets without restriction?”, this release does not establish that.
