That tonal clash is the hook of the first trailer: Robert Pattinson plays a worker whose job requires him to die, while each new disaster is presented with an unexpectedly buoyant touch.
What the first trailer shows
TheWrap’s September 17, 2024 report describes Mickey drowning in lava, losing a hand in outer space and freezing to death. The trailer’s upbeat musical counterpoint is Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.” TheWrap also reports that Mickey encounters another version of himself, and that Mark Ruffalo’s character says the multiples must be “exterminated.” These are reported trailer details, not a reason to mistake the film’s premise for a string of unrelated death gags.

TheWrap’s trailer report captures the contrast: disturbing physical danger set against comic staging and cheerful music.
Why Mickey keeps dying
In the film’s official synopsis, Mickey Barnes is an “expendable” whose employer demands that he “die, for a living.” TheWrap reports that he signs up without reading the fine print; when he dies, a clone replaces him and retains most of his memories. The job makes the repeated deaths part of the story’s labor premise, not just a running visual joke.

The film is written and directed by Bong Joon Ho and based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, as the official movie site confirms. The title’s number is not a viewing-order instruction: the story is about Mickey Barnes and his expendable work, not a requirement to watch sixteen earlier films. The source novel is a useful place to explore the premise, but the official site does not present it as required reading.
A strange hero’s journey, not just a death montage
At Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation in April 2024, Bong described the story as “a very strange type of hero’s journey” and said it was “about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world,” according to the Associated Press. Pattinson said at the same event that he was told, “you’re going to love the script, but the part is impossible,” and called the story “unusual, funny and bizarre.” Those comments predate the public trailer and should be read as descriptions from that event, not remarks made specifically about its scenes.

The trailer’s comic energy sits alongside the bodily cost of Mickey’s work. The official synopsis supplies the central tension: a person is treated as replaceable because dying is part of the job, even as each replacement carries memories forward.

The final dates on the official movie site are March 7, 2025, for the United States theatrical release, and March 5, 2025, as the start of international release. An earlier September 2024 trailer report listed January 31, 2025; that was not the final U.S. date.
