Who was Michelle Trachtenberg?
Trachtenberg grew up in Brooklyn and began acting as a child. She appeared as Nona Mecklenberg on Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete, then took the title role in the 1996 film Harriet the Spy. The film brought her a starring role while she was still young.
Her early work also included the title role in the film adaptation of Inspector Gadget. In later years, her credits included EuroTrip (2004), Ice Princess (2005), 17 Again (2009), the series Mercy (2009–2010), Six Feet Under, Weeds and Meet, Marry, Murder. In 2000, Trachtenberg joined Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Dawn Summers, the younger sister of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s title character. She played Dawn through 2003, becoming part of the show’s later seasons and a familiar face to its audience.

Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl
Trachtenberg later played Georgina Sparks, a recurring antagonist in the ensemble drama Gossip Girl. She returned to the role for two guest appearances in the 2021 revival, connecting her performance to a new generation of the show’s viewers.
What happened to Michelle Trachtenberg?
Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 8 a.m. on February 26, 2025, at Trachtenberg’s Manhattan residence. The Associated Press reported that she was found unconscious and unresponsive; paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Police said foul play was not suspected. Her family asked for privacy.

On April 16, 2025, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined that Trachtenberg died from complications of diabetes mellitus and classified the manner of death as natural, according to CBS News and ABC News.
That was the later, amended finding—not the initial status reported after her death. Early coverage said the cause and manner were undetermined after her family objected to an autopsy. CBS reported that laboratory results led to the updated finding; ABC reported that no autopsy was performed and that toxicology results provided additional clarity. The medical examiner’s determination superseded the initial undetermined classification.
