Harper’s Bazaar identified the dress as a Bottega Veneta design from the brand’s Pre-Fall 2024 collection. The asymmetrical leather dress paired a scoop-neck bodice with a gathered bubble skirt that swept to one side. Harper’s Bazaar’s December 17, 2024 report describes the boots as black leather, thigh-high, ruched, pointed-toe and stiletto-heeled.
Over the dress, Obama wore a long, mocha-colored, single-breasted blazer with notch lapels and front pockets. Large pear-shaped earrings in warm ombré tones and thick gold rings added color and shine to the otherwise deep brown and black palette.
How the boots and dress worked together
The boots echoed the dress’s leather material and dark color, while their gathered shafts added texture beneath the sculptural bubble skirt. The pointed toes and stiletto heels made the footwear a sharp contrast to the skirt’s rounded, voluminous shape. The blazer introduced a softer mocha tone and a tailored line above the dress.

This was not the 2018 gold dress and Balenciaga boots
Obama’s 2024 appearance is distinct from her much-discussed 2018 Becoming book-tour look: that earlier outfit paired a gold shirtdress with incandescent thigh-high Balenciaga boots. In a 2022 interview with Vogue, her stylist Meredith Koop discussed that styling and her broader approach to dressing clients. “At the end of the day my job with all of my clients is to make them feel good. That is what I do,” Koop said. The interview also includes Koop’s general comments about choosing supportive shoes; they are not a description of the boots Obama wore in 2024.
What to look for in a similar outfit
Harper’s Bazaar’s report identifies the original dress and describes the boots, but does not establish a current retail listing, price or availability for either item. For a visual alternative, searching for “black thigh-high ruched boots” may surface similar styles, not the exact Bottega Veneta pair. Compare the features that define the look:
