Ballerina Michaela DePrince died in New York City on September 10, 2024, aged 29. Her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, died the following day, September 11, aged 77, during a routine procedure in preparation for surgery. The family said the deaths were unrelated and that Elaine had not been told of her daughter’s death.

Were the deaths related?
No connection was reported. A family representative, Jess Volinski, shared the family’s clarification that the deaths were unrelated and that Elaine did not know about Michaela’s death. Elaine’s reported procedure was in preparation for surgery; the available accounts do not establish a more specific medical cause for her death.
What was Michaela DePrince’s cause of death?
The reports published at the time said Michaela’s cause of death was not immediately clear or publicly disclosed. No cause should be inferred from the circumstances of her mother’s death.

Who was Michaela DePrince?
Michaela was a professional ballerina and a second soloist with Boston Ballet. She had also danced with Dance Theatre of Harlem and Dutch National Ballet. Boston Ballet Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen said, “It was an absolute honor to have Mabinty in our Company for three seasons. Her indelible spirit inspired so many.”
Michaela and Elaine co-wrote the 2014 memoir Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, published internationally as Hope in a Ballet Shoe.

The family described the period as deeply painful and asked for privacy. It requested donations to War Child in lieu of flowers.
