Michael Richards, best known as Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld, disclosed in May 2024 that he had been diagnosed with stage one prostate cancer in 2018. He said a routine check-up found high PSA levels and that he underwent surgery to remove his entire prostate. Richards described his young son as a reason he wanted more time, and said he believed that without surgery he probably would have been dead in about eight months.
When Richards was diagnosed—and when he told the public
The diagnosis was made in 2018, but Richards shared the story publicly in May 2024. The delay matters: his disclosure was about a past diagnosis and treatment, not an announcement of a new cancer diagnosis or recurrence. The Independent and Fox News reported that the cancer was stage one and was found after a routine check-up showed high PSA levels.
What Richards said about surgery
Richards said he underwent surgery to remove his entire prostate. Accounts differ on whether his doctors recommended the operation: The Independent’s report says they did not, while Sky News and Fox News describe his surgery without that detail. The available accounts therefore establish that he had the operation, but do not settle what advice his doctors gave him.
Why his son figured in the decision
Richards said his son, who was nine at the time, motivated him to seek more time. Sky News quoted him saying: “I’ve got a nine-year-old and I’d like to be around for him. Is there any way I can get a little more life going?” His comments describe his own reasoning; they are not a general recommendation about prostate cancer treatment.

What the “eight months” estimate means
Richards said, “I had to go for the full surgery. If I hadn’t, I probably would have been dead in about eight months,” according to The Independent. That is his retrospective estimate, not a prognosis independently confirmed by a treating physician or a general survival figure for people with prostate cancer.

Richards discusses the diagnosis in his memoir, Entrances and Exits. The book is a personal account, not a medical guide. The Independent and Fox News noted the memoir in their coverage.
