How the reporting changed
TheWrap’s July 3 report said DiCaprio and Bale were set to star as Shiherlis and Hanna, while noting that Amazon MGM had said no deals had been finalized at that time. It described Graham as being in talks to play McCauley. By September, the outlet described Graham as part of the cast and added Young, Moss-Bachrach and Cid. These are reports at different dates, so the newer account updates the earlier picture without making the two actors still in talks confirmed cast members. See TheWrap’s July 3 report.

How does Heat 2 connect to the original?
The film adapts Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner’s 2022 novel. Like the book, it is both a prequel and a sequel to Mann’s Heat: its story includes events before and after the 1995 film. TheWrap reports that the novel is partly set in South America and Southeast Asia; that context indicates a wider story world, but does not establish the film’s complete plot or confirmed locations.
What is known about production and release timing?
Production List’s October 4, 2026, listing labels Heat 2 “In Production” and names Mann as director, Gardiner as writer, and Bale and DiCaprio among the cast. TheWrap’s September 24 report, however, said filming would begin in November, while the Production List entry includes a July 2026 shoot date and lists Los Angeles, Chicago and Las Vegas. Those schedule details do not align, so neither a precise filming start nor a settled location schedule can be stated confidently. The listing is available at Production List. No release date is established in these sources.

What should you watch before Heat 2?
The 1995 Heat is the essential companion for understanding the returning characters and the story’s sequel timeline. 20th Century Studios lists it as an R-rated film released December 15, 1995, running 2 hours 50 minutes, and written and directed by Michael Mann. Its ensemble includes Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. The studio’s official film page lists streaming and Blu-ray, DVD and digital availability; check that page for current viewing options.
TheWrap’s July 2026 report gives the original film’s gross as $187.4 million against a $60 million budget. Those figures are attributed to TheWrap, which does not cite the underlying box-office source in the report; they should be read as its reported comparison, not independently verified figures. TheWrap’s report provides the context.
