Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of November 15, 2025. That is a dated U.S. chart placement—not a current ranking—and it is separate from the sales record held by the album Thriller. The song’s chart position does not, by itself, establish that it broke a new record.
What record did Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” break 42 years later?
The verifiable milestone is a return to the Billboard Hot 100: Billboard listed “Thriller” at No. 10 for the week of November 15, 2025. The chart page describes the Hot 100 as ranking songs using streaming activity, radio audience impressions and sales data tracked or compiled by Luminate. Billboard’s Hot 100 chart is the source for the position and chart methodology.

That placement is not evidence, on its own, that the song broke a record. A record claim needs a specific category and a supporting chart or record-keeper. The available chart result establishes the song’s position for that week, not a new all-time achievement.
Why the “42 years later” framing needs a date
Guinness World Records gives November 30, 1982, as the release date of the album Thriller. The November 15, 2025, Hot 100 week falls nearly 43 years after that date, so “42 years later” is not a precise interval from the album’s release. The chart result should be identified by its week rather than described as a live or timeless ranking.

The album’s sales record is a different claim
Guinness World Records identifies Thriller as the world’s best-selling album. It reports that the Recording Industry Association of America certified shipments of 34 million units on August 20, 2021. That is a U.S. shipment certification reported for the album—not a count of the song’s streams, sales during its 2025 chart week, or a 2025 sales total. Guinness World Records’ album record provides the distinction.
| Claim | What it measures | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| “Thriller” at No. 10 | One song’s position on a weekly U.S. singles chart | Billboard Hot 100, week of November 15, 2025; chart inputs include streaming, radio audience and sales data. |
| Thriller as the world’s best-selling album | The album’s long-running sales distinction | Guinness World Records; it reports an RIAA certification of 34 million U.S. shipments dated August 20, 2021. |
Why the song remains part of music history
The chart return is one measurable moment in the song’s afterlife; the album’s broader cultural legacy is a separate subject. The Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board essay describes the song’s impact this way: “Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ changed the trajectory of music—the way it sounded, the way it felt, the way it looked, the way it was consumed.” Read the Library of Congress essay on “Thriller” for that cultural-history context.
Rank #2
- JACKSON MICHAEL THRILLER - 25TH - CLASSIC COVER (CD+DVD)
Calling “Thriller” Jackson’s “greatest” song is a matter of opinion, not a ranking established by these chart and record sources. A claim that it is the greatest would need to be attributed to a particular critic, poll or publication.
