Its film-style storytelling, elaborate creature effects and zombie choreography helped make it a landmark music video; the Library of Congress later selected it for the National Film Registry.
What are some facts about Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video?
-
It was conceived as a theatrical short
Director John Landis described “Thriller” as “a 15-minute theatrical short” and said he wanted it to play before a feature, like classic comedy shorts. The Recording Academy describes the work as nearly 14 minutes long. These are different ways of expressing its duration: the Academy’s approximate runtime and Landis’s rounded description of the short’s form. “An American Werewolf in London” sparked the idea
Landis recalled that Jackson contacted him after seeing An American Werewolf in London, Landis’s 1981 horror film, and loving the metamorphosis scenes created with makeup artist Rick Baker. (Library of Congress interview, 2024)

Jackson wanted to become a monster on screen
Landis recalled that Jackson’s central creative wish was to transform into a monster. “All he wanted to do, his whole contribution, was to turn into a monster on screen,” Landis said. (Library of Congress interview, 2024)
