Radio presenter Michael Christian sued Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), the company behind Sydney station 2Day FM, over how it treated him after the station’s 2012 royal prank call and his February 2025 redundancy, according to a July 2025 report based on court documents. Christian’s claims—including that he was directed to make the call and later denied promised support—are allegations, not findings by a court. The case concerns his employment dispute with SCA; it is not a new lawsuit over nurse Jacintha Saldanha’s death.
What Christian alleges in his lawsuit
Australian Associated Press reported on 7 July 2025 that Christian had sued SCA in the Federal Court. The account was based on court documents, and the claims described in it had not been established by a court.
- Direction to make the call: Christian alleged that the production team ordered him to place the prank call.
- Support after the incident: He alleged SCA failed to provide health, public-relations and career support that had been promised.
- Redundancy: Christian alleged that his February 2025 redundancy was not genuine because SCA still needed his former role.
He was seeking penalties, compensation for economic loss and damages. AAP said the matter had yet to appear before the Federal Court when it reported the lawsuit. The material available from July 2025 does not establish a later procedural development or outcome.
What happened in the 2012 prank call
On 4 December 2012, 2Day FM presenters Christian and Mel Greig called King Edward VII’s Hospital in London, impersonating members of the British royal family. Catherine, then the Duchess of Cambridge, was a patient there during her pregnancy. Nurse Jacintha Saldanha answered and transferred the call to a colleague, who disclosed information about Catherine’s condition.

Saldanha died days later. ABC’s report at the time described the death as an “apparent suicide” and said police had not yet determined the circumstances. Later reporting described her death as suicide. The reported sequence does not, by itself, establish a simple causal chain between the broadcast and her death or determine who was responsible for the later harm.
At the time, King Edward VII’s Hospital chairman Lord Simon Glenarthur condemned the call. ABC quoted him saying: “King Edward VII’s Hospital cares for sick people, and it was extremely foolish of your presenters even to consider trying to lie their way through to one of our patients, let alone actually make the call,”

Who decided to broadcast the call?
The question of who made the call and who decided to air it are distinct. Christian’s allegation that the production team directed him is part of his 2025 case; it is not a court finding in the July 2025 reporting.
In a 2013 statement reported by ABC, SCA said Greig was not responsible for the decision to broadcast the call. The statement said she had suggested edits, but 2Day FM chose to air the call without alteration. That is SCA’s reported account of the broadcast decision, separate from Christian’s later allegations about the production team.

Former SCA chief executive Rhys Holleran, who led the company at the time, later told ABC, as quoted in AAP’s 2025 report: “I have always felt completely and utterly responsible for this.” His expression of responsibility is relevant context, but it does not resolve the allegations in Christian’s employment case.
Is this the same case as Mel Greig’s workplace dispute?
No. ABC reported in 2013 that Greig’s separate workplace dispute was resolved and that she resigned. Christian’s 2025 action is a different case, brought against SCA and focused on his allegations about post-incident support and his redundancy. The 2013 dispute should not be treated as an outcome or ruling in Christian’s case.

Has the Federal Court decided Christian’s case?
The reporting described here does not establish a court decision. AAP said on 7 July 2025 that the matter had yet to appear before the Federal Court. Without a later court source, it is not possible to say whether the case subsequently proceeded, settled or was decided.
