Michael B. Jordan won his first Academy Award on March 15, 2026, taking Best Actor for playing twins Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s supernatural horror film Sinners. The reported 34-year gap refers narrowly to Best Actor wins for performances classified as horror: Anthony Hopkins won for The Silence of the Lambs in 1992, before Jordan’s win in 2026. It does not mean horror performances went 34 years without any acting Oscar.
What Michael B. Jordan won for Sinners
At the 98th Academy Awards, Jordan won Best Actor for his dual performance as Smoke and Stack, identical twins in a supernatural horror story set in 1930s Mississippi. It was his first Oscar. The Associated Press reported that Sinners received 16 nominations and won four awards. Associated Press
The award recognized Jordan in the lead-actor category, not a separate horror-film category. The Academy’s Best Actor prize is awarded for a performance; genre is a description of the film, not an official Academy classification attached to the award.
What the reported 34-year horror-film gap means
The 34 years run from Anthony Hopkins’s 1992 Best Actor win for The Silence of the Lambs to Jordan’s 2026 win for Sinners. ComicBook.com frames Jordan as the third male Best Actor winner for a horror role, following Fredric March, who won for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1932, and Hopkins. That is the outlet’s historical count, not an Academy statistic. ComicBook.com
#1 Best Overall
The scope matters: the claim concerns male winners in Best Actor and works the writer counts as horror. It should not be widened into a 34-year drought for horror acting Oscars overall. Best Actress winners have included Kathy Bates for Misery and Jodie Foster for The Silence of the Lambs. Genre labels can also be debated, particularly for films that mix horror with other forms.
Jordan’s twin-role milestone
Jordan also became the first performer in more than half a century to win a lead-actor Oscar for playing twins, according to the Los Angeles Times. The previous winner cited was Lee Marvin, who played twin gunfighters in the 1965 western spoof Cat Ballou. Los Angeles Times

How the Best Actor race turned
Jordan won against Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent. The Los Angeles Times reported that Chalamet had been viewed as the frontrunner for much of awards season, while Jordan’s Actor Awards win shortly before Oscar voting closed changed the race’s momentum. Sinners also won Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler and cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw. Best Picture went to One Battle After Another, according to the Associated Press. Associated Press
