Jordan won the Academy Award for Actor in a Leading Role for Sinners at the 98th Oscars on March 15, 2026. The win was his first Oscar. The Associated Press described him as the sixth Black man to win the best actor trophy.
What Oscar did Michael B. Jordan win for Sinners?
Jordan received the Academy’s award for Actor in a Leading Role. The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and honored films released in 2025. “Best Actor” is common shorthand; the Academy’s category wording is “Actor in a Leading Role.”
Jordan played identical twins Smoke and Stack in Sinners, a supernatural horror film set in 1930s Mississippi, according to the Associated Press. His award was his first Oscar.
Why was the win historic?
The Associated Press identified Jordan as the sixth Black man to win the best actor trophy. That historical count is AP’s framing; it is not the formal name of the Academy category. In his acceptance speech, Jordan acknowledged artists who came before him, naming Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and Will Smith.
#1 Best Overall
“I stand here because of the people that came before me — Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith,” Jordan said onstage. “And to be up amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys, thank you everybody in this room and everybody at home supporting me over my career.” The Academy posted the official ceremony video; the quotation here is reported by the Associated Press.
How did Sinners fare at the 2026 Oscars?
The Associated Press reported that Sinners received 16 nominations and won four awards at the 98th Oscars. One of those wins was for cinematography, awarded to Autumn Durald Arkapaw, according to the Academy’s results. Jordan’s acting award was part of a strong night for the film.
