The words reflected a relationship shaped by the Osbournes’ early support of Metallica, a shared performance of Black Sabbath songs, and a final onstage salute weeks before Osbourne’s death.
What did Metallica say about Ozzy Osbourne?
In a statement attributed to Metallica’s Instagram tribute, the band wrote: “It’s impossible to put into words what Ozzy Osbourne has meant to Metallica. Hero, icon, pioneer, inspiration, mentor, and, most of all, friend are a few that come to mind.” The wording was reported by Althea Legaspi in Rolling Stone Australia on July 23, 2025.
Metallica also credited Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne with believing in the band and transforming its life and career. The tribute described Ozzy as someone who showed them how to play in the big leagues while remaining warm and welcoming. Its language of friendship was grounded in a history that began when Metallica was still an emerging band.
Why did Metallica call Ozzy Osbourne a mentor?
The Osbournes helped Metallica reach American arenas
Metallica said the Osbournes took the band on tour early in its career. Lars Ulrich recalled that the opportunity moved Metallica from trying to figure out what it was doing to playing arenas in America. The experience gave the young band a close view of performing at a larger scale, which helps explain why the tribute connected Ozzy’s mentorship with both practical guidance and personal warmth.

Black Sabbath songs became a shared stage moment
At soundchecks, Metallica members would play Black Sabbath songs and hope Ozzy might join them. That wish came true at the 2009 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame event, where Metallica and Osbourne performed “Iron Man” and “Paranoid” together. The moment linked Metallica’s own musical roots to the friendship it later described in its tribute.
How did Metallica pay tribute to Ozzy at his final show?
On July 5, 2025, Metallica performed at Back to the Beginning, the farewell show in Birmingham, England. The band covered two Black Sabbath songs: “Hole in the Sky,” from the 1975 album Sabotage, and “Johnny Blade,” from the 1978 album Never Say Die! The choices made the performance a tribute through Osbourne’s music as well as a public appearance shortly before his death.
