Its canine co-star and cozy holiday setup are the main attractions; the reunion romance is more familiar and, in one professional review, less convincing. If you’re after dog montages and easy seasonal comfort, it may fit. If you want an especially fresh or deeply developed love story, temper your expectations.
What is Merv about?
After Anna and Russ break up, their shared dog, Merv, seems to lose his spark. Russ takes him to Florida for a getaway, but Anna turns up unexpectedly. The trip gives the former couple a chance to reconnect, with Merv at the center of their unfinished relationship.
Zooey Deschanel plays Anna and Charlie Cox plays Russ. Chris Redd and Patricia Heaton are also among the performers named in Amazon’s Prime Video guide. Jessica Swale directed the film; Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart wrote it.
Does the dog steal the movie?
That is the film’s clearest appeal. The story makes Merv more than a cute addition to the scenery: the dog’s apparent sadness after the breakup helps bring Anna and Russ back into one another’s orbit. The resulting dog-centered scenes and montages give the movie its easiest source of warmth.

My read is that the premise works best when the film leans into Merv and the low-stakes holiday mood. The human relationship has less room to surprise: the setup points toward familiar rom-com turns, and the question is less whether the exes might reconnect than whether their time together makes that reunion feel earned.
How well do the romance and comedy work?
In his December 9, 2025 review for The Guardian, Adrian Horton describes the movie as “slight and sweet and entirely to expectations.” He welcomes Cox’s willingness to play the comedy and sees chemistry in his performance, but finds Deschanel’s Anna comparatively dry and aloof. Horton also questions how comfortably the film’s different tones fit together. That is one critic’s response, not a consensus or a guarantee of how any particular viewer will feel.
The tension is useful to keep in mind: viewers who mainly want a sweet dog-and-holiday movie may be content with a familiar romance in the background. Those who need the couple’s relationship to feel nuanced, or the comedy to have a sharper identity, may find the human story thinner than the premise promises.
Is Merv worth watching?
Choose it for Merv, the seasonal setting and an easygoing exes-reconnect setup—not for a radically new romantic-comedy formula. At 105 minutes, it is a modest commitment for a cozy movie night, especially if canine charm matters more to you than elaborate character development.
