Melissa Barrera said her removal from Scream VII was “shocking,” while also saying she was at peace with the outcome. In a January 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, she described her advocacy as rooted in human rights and humanity. The firing followed her social-media posts about the Israel-Hamas war; Spyglass Media Group said it acted because it viewed the posts as crossing its line on antisemitism and hate speech.
What Barrera said about being fired
In a Rolling Stone interview discussed in reports published January 24, 2024, Barrera recalled: “I’m not the first person that’s happened to, but it was shocking.” The quotation is reproduced in contemporaneous coverage.

She also said: “I don’t even know what to say. I think everything that happened was very transparent, on both sides, and I know who I am, and I know that what I said always came from a place of love and a place of humanity and a place of human rights and a place of freedom for people, which shouldn’t be controversial. It shouldn’t be up for debate.” These are Barrera’s words as quoted by the reporting, rather than a directly verified transcript of the interview.
At the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Barrera said she was at peace and called for an end to violence and a ceasefire “for the well-being of both sides of that wall,” according to The Independent.

Why Spyglass said it removed her
Spyglass removed Barrera from Scream VII in November 2023, after her social-media posts about the Israel-Hamas war. The company’s stated position was that the posts crossed its boundary on antisemitism and hate speech. Spyglass described one post as invoking an antisemitic trope about Jews controlling the media; that is the studio’s characterization, not an independently established finding.
In a statement quoted by Us Weekly, Spyglass said: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.” The statement sets out the company’s rationale; the cited coverage does not establish an independent adjudication of its allegations.

How Barrera responded publicly
In her first public response, posted to an Instagram Story and quoted by Us Weekly, Barrera wrote: “I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people.” She added: “As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard.”
Her January interview and later Sundance remarks framed her position in terms of humanity, human rights, freedom, and peace. Those statements are her account of her intentions; Spyglass’s statement is the company’s account of why it acted.

Where the firing fits in the Scream timeline
- Barrera played Sam Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), as reported by Variety.
- In November 2023, Spyglass removed her from the then-upcoming Scream VII after her posts about the war.
- She discussed the firing with Rolling Stone in January 2024; reports quoting her “shocking” remark appeared January 24.
- Jenna Ortega’s exit and director Christopher Landon’s departure were later, separate developments in the production story. Barrera’s interview did not cause either departure.
