K-12 is a 2019 musical fantasy film written and directed by Melanie Martinez, who stars as Cry Baby. It follows her into a lavish-looking sleepaway school where a controlling institution enforces social conformity. The film pairs pastel spectacle with serious themes—including bullying, body insecurity, eating disorders, gender inequality and social pressure—and is best approached as a surreal pop musical, not a conventional school drama.
What is K-12 about?
Cry Baby, now a teenager, arrives at a sleepaway school that looks ornate and inviting but conceals an oppressive system. She and her friends encounter a Principal and staff who control students and impose what Apple TV’s film description calls “belligerent patriarchal conditioning.” The story follows their experiences inside that institution and their resistance to its rules.
Martinez has described the contrast as central to the film: “With K-12 I outwardly highlight the light side with this grandiose and beautiful facade of costumes and sets. The school in the film is very ornate and detailed and pastel, and very light and pretty, but then behind that facade is a very scary, oppressive, controlling place.” She discussed the film’s design and themes with Katie Couric Media.
Is K-12 a movie or an album?
It is both: a feature film and the visual companion to Martinez’s K-12 album. The linked works were released on September 6, 2019. Apple Music describes the film as a 92-minute feature; Apple TV lists a runtime of 1 hour 36 minutes. Those listings differ slightly in how they express the runtime.

Martinez wrote and directed the film, styled and edited it, and plays Cry Baby, according to the Apple Music album listing. The main US edition of that listing has 14 songs and a 46-minute album runtime; other editions show 13 songs, so the track count depends on the edition.
What themes does the film explore?
The school setting gives the film a way to address pressures that extend beyond the classroom. Martinez has discussed bullying, body insecurity, eating disorders, gender inequality, substance abuse and transphobia. The album listing associates “Orange Juice” with bulimia, “Strawberry Shortcake” and “Show & Tell” with self-worth, and “Lunchbox Friends” with social pressure.

These are subjects represented through the film’s story and the artist’s framing, not clinical advice. Martinez has said some of Cry Baby’s experiences draw on her own: she was mocked at school for her tooth gap. She also described the bully as a character whose attacks can serve as a defense against personal insecurities. In the interview, she explained her personal connection to the bullying storyline.
What message did Melanie Martinez intend?
Martinez has said she wanted to make music and art that could help people, drawing on the way music had helped her. She framed the film’s intended takeaway around confidence, persistence and continuing toward goals despite doubt. As she put it: “Learning to be confident has been so important for me, and it’s the message I’m trying to get across to my fans.” That is her stated aim, not a claim that watching the film produces a therapeutic effect.

Where can you watch K-12?
Apple TV currently has a catalog listing for the film. It identifies English as the original audio and lists subtitles in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish variants. Storefront access and subtitle availability may differ by country, so check the listing for your region. The official K-12 film site also presents a “GET IT NOW” link, but that alone does not establish availability on every service or in every territory.
Atlantic Records’ 2019 announcement said the film was streaming on Martinez’s official YouTube channel and named other digital platforms at the time. That is historical release information, not confirmation that those routes remain available. The announcement also described the original one-night cinema event as reaching 425 screenings in over 32 countries; the film site’s retrospective figure is 425 screenings in 32 countries. The two sources phrase the country count differently.

Is there a CD and DVD edition?
A retailer lists K-12 in CD and CD+DVD editions. The CD+DVD package is a relevant option for someone who wants the album and film in a physical release. Search for “Melanie Martinez K-12 CD DVD,” then verify the seller’s current listing, package contents, disc region and condition; a listing does not guarantee current stock.
