The first marriage and separation
Griffith and Johnson married in 1976 and separated a short time later, according to the Los Angeles Times. A 1994 Deseret News report said they divorced less than two years after the wedding. These accounts establish the sequence, but not an exact wedding or divorce date.

In December 1988, the Los Angeles Times reported that the couple planned to marry again. Their remarriage followed in 1989, according to Deseret News. At the time of the 1988 announcement, spokesman Elliott Mintz said, “Both Don and Melanie wish to enjoy this very special time together.” The statement conveyed the couple’s public message; it does not explain what led them to reunite.

The couple had a daughter during their second marriage. In its 1994 coverage, Deseret News identified her as four-year-old Dakota Mayi Johnson. The Los Angeles Times also reported that they had a daughter.
Griffith’s 1994 divorce filing was withdrawn
Deseret News reported that Griffith filed for divorce in Los Angeles in March 1994, then withdrew the action later that day. Mintz, the couple’s publicist, described the filing in a prepared statement as “an impulsive act that occurred during a moment of frustration and anger” and called it a mistake. That is the publicist’s account of the filing, not an independently established explanation of Griffith’s private motives.

When did they finally divorce?
The available reference biographies give conflicting years for the end of the second marriage. Encyclopedia.com lists 1995, while an indexed Wikipedia biography lists 1996. The contemporaneous reports cited here do not settle the discrepancy, so the firmest account is that Griffith and Johnson later divorced, without assigning a definitive year.
