Former New York Yankees outfielder Mel Hall was convicted in Texas in 2009 of three counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child, in a case involving a 12-year-old girl he coached in youth basketball. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison. At sentencing, a different woman testified about an alleged relationship that began when she was 15 and Hall was in his first Yankees season in 1989. That testimony was separate from the conduct behind the reported Texas conviction counts.
What was Mel Hall convicted of?
In June 2009, a Texas jury convicted Hall of three counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child. The Associated Press reported that the case centered on a 12-year-old girl Hall coached on an elite basketball team. The verdict concerned that later Texas case—not the separate account about a 15-year-old during Hall’s Yankees years. The AP account republished by CBS News describes the verdict and sentencing.
Hall had been indicted in 2007 on allegations involving two girls he coached on elite basketball teams in the 1990s. An indictment is a formal accusation, not a finding of guilt; the convictions reported in 2009 are the outcome to distinguish from those earlier charges. The 2007 AP indictment report describes the charges at that stage.
Why was he sentenced to 45 years?
The sentence followed the five Texas convictions: three aggravated-sexual-assault counts and two indecency-with-a-child counts. The AP reported that Hall would have to serve about 22½ years before becoming eligible for parole. Eligibility is not a scheduled release date and does not guarantee release. The 45-year term and parole-eligibility figure are reported in the June 18, 2009 AP report.

Was the 15-year-old part of the Texas conviction case?
No—not according to the cited sentencing coverage. At Hall’s sentencing, a woman testified that she was 15 when an alleged relationship with Hall began in 1989, during his first season with the Yankees. The AP described this as separate testimony about an earlier allegation; it did not identify her as the 12-year-old at the center of the Texas case or as the victim behind the five conviction counts.
The AP report quoted the woman whose testimony concerned the Texas case: “I trusted him,” she said. “I honestly had no idea anything was inappropriate at the time. I looked up to him. I just thought this is how normal people act.” The quotation is her reported testimony, not a judicial finding about the separate 1989 account. CBS News’ AP report covers both the sentencing and the testimony, while keeping their contexts distinct.

What happened after Hall’s baseball career?
Hall played for the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. The AP reported career totals of a .276 batting average, 134 home runs and 620 runs batted in. Those statistics provide baseball context; they do not explain or establish anything about the criminal case. An AP career summary carried by SFGate reports the figures.
Hall’s story returned to television in 2024 in the docuseries Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball. Coverage at the time described Peacock as its premiere platform, but that does not establish where it is currently available to stream. Yahoo’s 2024 coverage and Audacy’s coverage discuss the series.
